OBITUARY. MR. JABEZ NICHOLLS After a brief illness of about a fortnight, death has claimed another well-known Gundagai district resident, in the person of Mr. Jabez Nicholls, who died at his home at Edwardstown on Thursday afternoon last, at the age of 54 years, all of which life was spent in Gundagai district. He was born at Snowball. At first deceased contracted a bad cold, which turned to bronchitis, but as he had never been subjected to illness in his life before, he thought he could shake it off and went out to supervise matters in the shearing shed, after which he developed pneumonia and was forced to lay up, the form being so severe that a trained nurse was requisitioned. Although it was thought he showed signs of improvement on Monday, on the following day he took a bad turn and passed away as stated, in the presence of his wife and family. Mr. Nicholls was a man who always called a spade a spade, and there was no backing and filling with him. He was a shrewd business man and capable dealer, and amassed much wealth by his great judgment in stock. From his boyhood he was a great worker and nothing was too hard for him to tackle, working long hours and taxing his strength to its utmost to save expense. He practically started from scratch and went on gaining ground inch by inch, until to-day he could safely be said to be in a very sound financial position, and now amidst it all, when he should be reaping the reward of his hard toil, he is taken away. Such is life, and the death of Mr Nicholls throws out a warning to others that they must study health first, and when it goes all the wealth in the world cannot replace it. Deceased was a powerful man, standing 6ft. 2in., and never knew what illness was, and this is practically the cause of his death, as he had had colds on numerous occasions before and staved them off, and naturally thought he could have done the same with the last and fatal attack. But, alas; his time had come. The late Mr. Nicholls married a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs. John Withers, of ''Frankfield," Brungle-road, and leaves a widow and four children to mourn the loss of a loving father and husband. The children axe: John (18), and three daughters, Ellen (21), Innes (16), and Kitty (14). Deceased is also survived by three brothers and two sisters, viz.: William, Cowra; Samuel, Five Mile, Gundagai; John, Bongongolong: Mrs Truelove, Illabo ; Mrs Cohen, Leichardt. Another brother (T. J. Nicholls) pre-deceased him by 2½ years. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon, when deceased's mortal remains were laid to rest in the C. of E. portion of the South Gundagai cemetery, the Rev. S. Davis reading the graveside service. The cortege was over a mile long and reached from the far end of Jessop's Cutting to the cemetery, which proved conclusively the respect in which deceased was in the district. — ''Gundagai Times." |
