REV, À. GRAINGER SMITH,
Thus, the Brisbane "Daily Mail": The announcement last night of the death of the Rev. Alexander Grainger Smith, of the New Farm Methodist Church came as a distinct shock to his friends throughout the Church. He had been in ill health for a considerable time past, but, except for intervals of weakness, he continued in the discharge of his ministerial duties until, last week, he was stricken down with an attack of pleurisy, to which he succumbed, after 34 years' ministry, the whole of which was spent in this State.
Mr. Smith came to Queensland from Victoria in 1895, and a year later was accepted as a candidate for the ministry, his first appointment being to Croydon, North Queensland. In subsequent years he served the Church faithfully as superintendent minister in many of the leading circuits of the State, including Ipswich, Laidley, Warwick, Toowoomba, Wooloowin, and Sandgate. In 1922 he was elected to the secretary- ship of the Queensland Conference, and in the following year he succeeded to the highest position in the Church, that of President. At last conference he was appointed to New Farm circuit, after three years' ministry at Sandgate, but owing to ill health he was not able to give of his full strength to the work. In his earlier years, Mr. Smith was regarded as one of the outstanding preachers of the denomination in this State, and as a successful circuit administrator. He has left a widow and two sons, the elder of whom is a school teacher at Mount Surprise and the other a bank official at Narandera, New South Wales.
