1815 WIFE TRAVELS TO OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD TO JOIN HER HUSBAND Ann faced a perilous journey, with two young children, to join her husband. They joined a female convict ship, the Northampton, along with a number of other convict's wives, most likely at Government expense. The Northampton arrived in Sydney 18 June 1815, with 106 female prisoners, 30 free women, and 42 children, some of those belonging to the convicts. The free women immediately joined their husbands. Part of the journal kept by the Northampton's surgeon, Joseph Arnold, survives. It contains an interesting account of life on board. Ann petitioned Governor Macquarie on 3 July 1815 to be placed on the stores. In 1816 James MORLEY was in Sydney, and shown as holding a ticket of leave [1816 Return of Prisoners: PRO Reel 50, H.O. 10/3. Convicts NSW & Tasmania, Male, 1816.]. More likely, James had been assigned to his wife on her arrival. It seems to early for a lifer to have been granted a ticket. In 1819 he was shown as at Government labour; 1821 as Government Employ.; 1822 assigned to his wife. After Ann joined her husband in NSW, the family expanded regularly, with a further seven children born between 1817 and 1831. 1820 COLONIAL SENTENCE SENT TO NEWCASTLE Sentenced by the Bench in Sydney on 5 Feb 1820 to 2 years imprisonment and sent 24 February on HM Brig Princess Charlotte to Newcastle. On 24 March 1820 Ann sought permission to proceed to Newcastle to rejoin her husband [Colonial Secretary's Correspondence: AO Reel 6007; 4/3501 pp.314-5]. Ann also petitioned for mitigation of her husband's sentence [Colonial Secretary's Correspondence: AO NSW Fiche 3222; 4/1866 p.103], and he was again assigned to her [[Colonial Secretary's Correspondence: Ann MORLEY was on a list dated 17 August 1822 of persons receiving an assigned convict: Fiche 3290; 4/4570D p.79] 1822 ASSIGNED TO WIFE 17 August 1822 Assignment to wife, living at Clarence Street. "Shoemaker" (sic)(Jnl 459)[1822 Muster] 1825 ASSIGNED TO WIFE AT NEWCASTLE [1825 Muster] 1826 IN TROUBLE WITH THE LAW AGAIN In 1826 James MORLEY was prosecuted for harbouring William COOPER, his future son in law, also a convict. COOPER seems to have visited the MORLEY's residence regularly, probably wooing MORLEY's eldest daughter, Mary Ann. James MORLEY living with Ann MORLEY, December 22nd 1825.   Harbouring Prisoner... James MORLEY, 22nd March 1826, in service to Ann MORLEY, Disorderly Conduct, Gaol Gang. Order, G. Brown, Esquire. 27 March 1826. James Morley assigned of (sic: "off"?) the stores and his wife... harbouring a Prisoner of the Crown. The Reverend Middleton states that William COOPER belongs to the Church Establishment and resides at the Parsonage. It has been for his quitting the premises without leave and especially not to the Morley House and I am confident MORLEY knew of the prohibition, yesterday. I saw COOPER about to leave the premises and ordered him to return to the kitchen which he absolutely refused as he frequently disobeyed my orders in this instance and continually absented himself and is always to be found at Morleys. JAMES MORLEY denies any knowledge of COOPER being at his house and undertakes not to suffer him to come again. ADMONISHED and DISCHARGED. [Newcastle Police Files, Reel 2747] [Extracts courtesy of Sue Lund and Ms. Keys] William COOPER wed MORLEY's eldest daughter, Mary Ann MORLEY at Christchurch, on 20 May 1826. Mary Ann was just xxx years old. The marriage celebrant was Rev. MIDDLETON (COOPER's employee). William doesn't seem to have gotten into trouble after this, apparently settling down, with a new family to support. The 1828 Census shows William's occupation as brickmaker, the same as his father in law, James MORLEY. 1828 Occupation shown as brickmaker, the family owned 2 cows [1828 Census] 1830 OCCUPATION BARMAN [per Baptism Register of 1830, when sons George, john and Edward were baptised. 1832 DIED NEWCASTLE AGED 44 James MORLEY died 31 August 1832 in Newcastle, NSW. The cause of death is unknown. He was said to be 44 years old, and still assigned to his wife. James was buried in the Parish of Christ Church, Newcastle. Ann MORLEY sought permission to marry James WELLS, a 37 year old farmer from the Parish of Christ Church, Newcastle, who was a convict holding a ticket of leave [Jnl 277]. They married on 18 July 1835, and their only child, Benjamin WELLS, was born in 1837, baptised in the Parish of Hexham. Ann died on 27 May 1858, at Honeysuckle Point in Newcastle, aged 64, suffering cardiac disease and hepatitis. Ann was buried in Christ Church burial ground. She was survived by nine adult children, but her two eldest daughters predeceased her
