Newcastle Morning Herald and Minera Advocate 29 June 1895
DEATH OF MR. INGALL, SEN.
Mr. ROBERT INGALL, the well-known draper,
died in the Newcastle Hospital shortly before
6 o'clock yesterday morning. Some months
ago the deceased underwent an operation for
an internal complaint, and being 74 years of
age he never recovered, and gradually became
weaker until last week, when it was known
that the end was approaohing. Mr. Ingall
came to the colony in 1848 from London,
under engagement to a Maitland soft-goods
firm, whose business he managed for some
years. Morpeth at that time was the princi
pal town in the north, and Mr. ingall com
menced business on his own account there as
a draper in 1852. Having built up a suc
cessful business he sold out, and, going into
partnership with Mr. Bond, he opened shops
in Maitland and Watt-street in this
city. For some years the firm were
the principal drapers in the district and on
the dissolution of partnership Mr. Ingall
commenced a new business in premises which
he erected on the site of Mr. Alfred Ingall's
present shop in Hunter-street, where the
name R. Ingall and Son still remains as the
designation of the firm. Some 10 years ago
the deceased retired from business, and since
then he has lived quietly at Waratah. In
his younger days he took a keen interest in
public matters and was for many years a
member of the committee of the hospital. He
leaves three sons, namely, Mr. Tom Ingall
and Mr. Alfred Ingall, who now have drapery
establishments of their own, and Mr. Walter
Ingall, a hotel proprietor at Dungog, and
one daughter, who is living in Sydney. The
funeral will take place to-day, and will leave
the residence of Mr Alfred Ingall, Waratah,
at 2.30 o'clock.
