Captain John Harrison is dead. Thirty-five years ago he went to Sydney in a small craft ; and thirty years ago he made the overland journey from Melbourne to Sydney.

The Mercury (Hobart) 27 July 1869
DEATH OF CAPTAIN HARRISON.
[From the Age.]
Captain John Harrison, one of the earliest settlers of this colony, died at Williamstown on Wednesday night of bronchitis, in the sixty seventh year of his age. For some time previous he had suffered from asthma, and a few days ago he caught a severe cold, which aggravated his complaint; but it was only within a few hours of his dissolution that he or his attendants knew that he was beyond the hope of recovery. Captain Harrison emigrated from England to Sydney about thirty-six years ago, and was engaged for some time as master of a vessel. He then settled himself on shore, and in 1838 he and his family came overland to Port Phillip, and bought a station on the River Plenty, from which locality he afterwards removed to the upper Wimmera. He was known to his friends as a
man of great enterprise and indomitable perseverance. The part he took during the agitation for separation in 1850 and 1851, and the refusal of the colonists to admit convicts into Victoria, will be remembered by such as were in the colony at that period. He was also prominent in advocating the diggers' rights and in frustrating the attempt made to impose a heavy licence fee upon the goldfields in 1854. Captain Harrison went to reside at Williamstown in 1859, having accepted employment on the Victorian Railways as station master, an office which he retained until his failing health compelled him to resign. About three or four months ago one of his sons was accidentally drowned, and the disaster appeared to have given the old man a severe shock. The deceased was a native of Cumberland (England), and in his younger days had served as an officer in the British navy. He was married in Sydney, and he has left a widow and several grown up sons and daughters. The funeral of the deceased gentleman will take place at Williamstown on Saturday afternoon.

DEATHS
HARRISON.-On December 6, at Molongo, Kew, Victoria, Emily Spencer, wife of H. C. A. Harrison, and loved mother of Mrs. John. MacKnight, late of Cottesloe.

The Argus 8 Dec 1925
The death occurred on Sunday at her residence at Walpole street, Kew, of Mrs. H. C. A. Harrison, in her 83rd year. Mrs. Harrison formed an interesting link with the past, as she was born on her father's "Lexington" station, near Ararat. Her father (Horatio Spencer Wills) was one of Victoria's first settlers and the original holder of the Lexington station. During her residence at Kew Mrs. Harrison had been closely connected with philanthropic movements, and during the war, though aged more than 70 years, worked indefatigably for the Red Cross Society.

HARRISON, HENRY COLDEN ANTILL (1836-1929), 'father' of Australian Rules football, was born on 16 October 1836 at Jarvisfield, the property of his uncle, Major Henry Colden Antill , near Picton, New South Wales, son of John Harrison and his wife Jane, née Howe, a relation of William Redfern , Thomas Reiby, George Howe and H. S. Wills . In 1850 the family settled in Melbourne where Harrison attended the new Diocesan Grammar School. His education was interrupted in 1852 by a visit to the goldfields, where he sympathized with the diggers' grievances. In 1853 he became an officer in the Customs Department and in 1888 transferred to the Titles Office where he became registrar.
Harrison's career as a public servant was worthy, but he was most distinguished as a sportsman. For nine years he was the champion 'pedestrian' of Victoria, defeating all comers in sprints and over hurdles and steeples. His contests with the Ballarat champion, L. L. Mount, aroused great interest. A Ballarat publican and race-horse-owner, Walter Craig, was said to have once held £10,000 to wager on Mount; after Harrison won, Craig offered to finance him in a foot-racing tour of England, but Harrison preferred his amateur status.
Melbourne's first football club was founded in 1858 by Harrison's cousin, T. W. Wills , a talented cricketer who was seeking a winter pastime. Harrison played in the first games, and was in succession captain of three football clubs. Wills had learned his football while at school at Rugby but considered that game 'unsuitable for grown men, engaged in making a livelihood'. The Victorian clubs evolved new rules which were consolidated in a code drafted by Harrison and adopted in 1866. It incorporated the distinctive features of the Australian game: no tripping or 'hacking', no 'off-side' rule, the 'mark' and carrying the ball. Harrison thus earned his honorific title as 'father of Australian Rules football'. He retired from playing in 1872 but maintained his interest in football. He became a vice-president of the Football Association formed in 1877; he was chairman in 1905 of the conference which formed the Australian National Football Council and was elected its elected its first life member; he was an honoured guest at the jubilee dinner in 1908 at which Alfred Deakin proposed the toast to Australian football. He also maintained his physical fitness; in 1898 he rode a bicycle from Melbourne to Sydney in ten days to see the final Test match against Stoddart's English 11. In 1923 in Melbourne he published his autobiography, The Story of an Athlete.
Harrison was handsome, lean and well groomed, somewhat unbending and puritanical, upright and honourable. He died in Melbourne on 2 September 1929, predeceased by his wife Emily, a sister of Tom Wills, and survived by four daughters. His coffin carried a wreath of violets in the shape of a football. His name is commemorated by Harrison House, the headquarters of the Victorian Football League.

Harrison was born at 'Jarvisfield', near Picton, New South Wales, the son of John Harrison, a sea captain who had become a grazier, and his wife Jane, née Howe. In about 1837, the family moved to the Port Phillip District, and took up land on the Plenty River about 20 miles (32 km) from Melbourne. Some years later, they moved to the present site of St Arnaud.

In 1850, Harrison's father, being broken in health, moved to Melbourne. Henry had already been sent at the beginning of the year to the Diocesan Grammar School (the forerunner of Melbourne Grammar). After leaving school, he spent a short time in the Victorian goldfields, H. C. A. Harrison entered formal employment at the Victorian Customs Department at the end of 1853. He married his cousin, Emily Wills, in 1864 and they had four daughters.

Harrison remained with Customs for 35 years, before transferring to the Titles Office in 1888. He eventually became Registrar of Titles, before retiring in 1900. His autobiography, The Story of an Athlete, was published in 1923. Harrison died at Kew, in Melbourne, on 2 September 1929, at age of 92.

Harrison did not discover he was a good runner until he was 22 years of age, but soon afterwards he became the finest amateur runner of his period, and his matches against L. L. Mount of Ballarat caused much public interest. For nine years he was Victorian champion 'pedestrian', defeating all comers in sprints and over hurdles and steeples.[1] He recorded a time of 50¼ seconds over 440 yards (400 m), on a grass track.

Football and cricket
Harrison's cousin Tom Wills began to codify Australian rules football in Melbourne, in 1858. Wills' game eventually became the most popular kind of football of in Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, Northern Territory and Tasmania. Some sources state that Harrison was involved and/or that he took part in the drafting of the first set rules, by the Melbourne Football Club (1859); Wills and Harrison were later recognised as the "Fathers" of Australian rules. However, there is no hard evidence that Harrison was involved in the development of Australian rules during the 1850s.

By 1866, Harrison was involved in drafting a revised set of rules, which were adopted at a meeting of delegates from Melbourne football clubs, on May 8. A major development in these revised rules was Rule 8, which read: "[T]he ball may be taken in hand at any time, but not carried further than is necessary for a kick, and no player shall run with the ball unless he strikes it against the ground every five or six yards." Harrison was successively captain of the Richmond, Melbourne and Geelong clubs, and then of Melbourne again.

Harrison was elected a member of the committee of the Melbourne Cricket Club in 1871, and was a vice-president from 1892 until his death.

Harrison retired from football in 1872 at the age of 36. He once stated that he considered that the reason of his being able to stay so long was that he did not begin his athletic career until he was over 20. When the Victorian Football Association was formed in 1877, Harrison was elected vice-president, and in 1905 he was chairman of the first Australian Football Council, and was officially granted life membership to the council.

Following his retirement, Harrison was president of the Melbourne Football Club from 1897 to 1906.

A building, "Harrison House" in Spring Street, Melbourne, was named after him. It was purchased by the VFL in the 1920s to become their new headquarters[1], but later sold and demolished in the 1980s despite appeals from various heritage organisations of its historical significance.

(The Harrison Medal, which is awarded to the best player in Division 2 at the AFL U18 National Championships is often mistakenly thought to be named in his honour. It is, however, named after longtime NTFL administrator Hunter C. Harrison.)
