by Annette Hassett

Agnes was born in Adelong on 21 August 1875, the eldest of eight children born to Henry and Mildred Murphy nee Perkins. Her grandfather John Murphy owned a general store at Gilmore and Henry came to the Adelong area where he worked a gold mine at Shephardstown with his brother-in-law John Perkins and W.D.P O'Brien. They later sold the gold mine for a large sum to an English syndicate, and the family purchased a farm at Grahamstown until they bought the Cosmopolitan Hotel at Grahamstown which was owned by William Hassett, whom Agnes married on 3 December 1896. The wedding took place at her parent's home at Surface Hill, Shephardstown.

After marriage Agnes and William lived at Mt Pleasant, a property at Ellerslie until their house burnt down, then returned to Grahamstown. They moved to Canbelego to purchase a hotel when copper mining created big business in the town. They eventually came back to Grahamstown, firstly living in the building previously run as the 'Little Plain' hotel, then in 1927 building a new home on the hill above, which still stands today on the Little Plain cattle property now run by her grandson Bill.

Agnes had a family of seven children, namely Emily (Mrs Arthur Jamieson), Rita (Mrs Alf Chandler), William James (married Junita Sturzaker), Edward (married Ada Williams), Leila (married Jack Riley and later Frank Connors), Henry (killed age 4 in a sulky accident) and Ken (married Nita Beegling).

Agnes was a wonderful home manager and employed household help. She began her community interests by collecting money, along with her friend Val Woods, to help build St. Luke's Anglican Church at Shephardstown and was a foundation member of the Adelong Country Women's Association. Other interests included being a keen gardener and with her husband attended the Melbourne Cup every year. She died at home on 28 June 1950 and is buried in the Adelong cemetery.
