Aged 82 Years
Born at Tomorroma in the Blowering Valley Son of Colin and Anne nee Cameron Married Alice Jones in 1882 at Tumut with 4 children born of this union. The Albury Banner and Wodonga Express (NSW : 1871 - 1938) Fri 1 Jul 1938 LIVED 82 YEARS IN DISTRICT Mr. Alexander McKenzie, to whose death at Tumut hospital on June 21 brief reference was made in last week's issue, spent his life in Brungle district, N.S.W. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Colin McKenzie, of Inverness, Scotland, who came to Australia in the early 1850 's, and was born at Tomorroma on December 22, 1855, where his parents had settled. He lost his father at an early age and he became the sole support of his mother, and with her worked the property selected by his parents and which is well known as one of the best farms on Brungle Creek, and now owned by Mr. Ben Purcell. Fifty-three years ago he married Miss Alice Jones, eldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Jones, of Tomorroma, and who predeceased him by 11 years. He was a noted horseman in his day and a keen judge of all stock. In this early days Mr. McKenzie trained and rode many good show hunters for Mr. Arthur Smith, then of Bongongo Station. One of these hunters was the noted Blonden. After his wife's death Mr. McKenzie sold his property and went to reside with his elder son until about 12 months ago, when his health began to fail, and he then went to live with his daughter, Mrs. O. M. Vallance, of Brungle. A nurse from Sydney, Nurse Jones, assisted Mrs. Vallance in caring for him. However, his health continued to get worse and about three months ago he was admitted to the Tumut District Hospital. There are three sons, George (Brungle), Colin (Queensland), Alex (Tumut) and one daughter, Mrs. O. Vallance (Brungle) surviving. One brother, Donald, and two sisters (Mrs. T. Hill and Mrs. H. Webb) predeceased him. Amongst the descendants there are eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The interment was in the Presbyterian portion of the Tumut New cemetery. Rev. Stuart M'Intyre officiated at the graveside. |
