Alexander and Sarah Braiden were both born in Co. Monaghan Ireland as was their eldest son Robert. Many Irish weavers emigrated to Scotland with the hope of finding better wages and conditions, they first went to Edinburgh then onto Dundee where the Jute industry was flourishing. They lived in West Dundee around Hawkhill and Alexander and his daughter Sarah died of dropsy around 1850.
