QUEANBEYAN. (From our own Correspondent.) SUDDEN DEATH OF CAPTAIN FAUNCE. On Saturday last the inhabitants of this district were greatly shocked by the awfully sudden death of Captain A. T. Faunce, while playing a game of cricket. It having been previously arranged that a cricket match should take place on this day, the deceased on that morning in question actively exerted himself in making preparation for the game. He took very great interest in the play, and both in batting and bowling displayed even more than his usual skill. Between four and five o'clock towards the conclusion of the game, while in the act of throwing the ball, he suddenly fell to the ground and without uttering a word, instantly expired. Thus shewing how truly it is said " That in the midst of life we are in death." It was at first supposed that he had thrown himself down from fatigue, but the fearful result was too soon apparent. Dr. Morton who was near the spot, immediately ran to his assistance, but no human aid was of any avail. Our lamented friend was in excellent spirits during the day, although he had several times complained of a pain in his heart, and had been observed frequently to place his hand upon his left side. Life having been found to be extinct, the body was removed to the residence of the Rev. E. Smith, whlere he had been residing for some time, whilst making arrangements for bringing up his wife and family. Captain Faunce's long residence amongst us, now upwards of eightteen years, his urbane manner, mild, kind dis position, his exemplary conduct in every social relation of life, have rendered him deservedly beloved, esteemed and respected by all classes of the community. The funeral took place on Monday, the 28th ult. the remains being interred in a vault in the burial ground of Christ Chuch, Queanbeyan. Although none of the relatives of the deceased had time to be present at the funeral, it was gratifying to observe that every mark of respect was paid to his memory. Short as the notice was, we never before saw so many persons assembled together in the district; all seemed deeply affected on the sad occasion. The Burial Service was performed in a very impressive manner by the Rev. P. G. Smith, incumbent of Canbery, who headed the funeral, attended by W. F. Hayley, Esq., J.P., the medical attendant of deceased, then followed the coffin, borne by turns on the shoulders of the inhabitants, six of deceased's brother magistrates acting as pall bearers, next came as chief mourners the Rev. E. Smith, Incumbent of Queanbeyan, with Henry Zouch, Esq., Commandant of the Southern Patrol, an old brother officer; then about forty gentlemen of the district, the carriages of Dr. Murray and others; the members of the Queanbeyan Lodge of Odd Fellows, in full funeral regalia. The constabulary force and several hundred other persons in procession. The whole arrangements did great credit to Mr. D. Jordan, the undertaker. The deceared was about 47 years of age. |
