The Tumut and Adelong Times 17 Aug 1926
Adelong Splashes DEATH OF MR. A. L. BOURGOIN With the death of Mr. Alphonse Legorie Bourgoin there passed away one of the real grand old men of the Adelong district. Always a gentle man, he claimed the esteem and admiration of everyone who knew him. Born at Bordeaux, France, 87 years ago, he sailed for Australia when an adventurous lad, arriving here 72 years since. In this country he followed various occupations. He was a trusted servant of a man named Gass, for some years managing stores for him at several places. Being a first-class stonemason, several monuments of his work are still standing in Adelong, notably the Catholic and Methodist churches, which he assisted the late Mr. Forrestiere to build. Mr. Forrestiere and Mr. Bourgoin were also partners later on in a vineyard here, and manufactured the wine themselves. In still later years, Mr. Bourgoin drove the winding engines on many of the local gold mines, and was noted for being a most careful driver. On one occasion he got his hand jammed in the machinery, and it was badly crushed, and after that he always had what he termed a "crooked" hand, as some of the bones had not been set aright. Whilst engine driving at the Gibraltar gold mines some years ago, as he was about to mount his horse to ride home, the animal lashed out, and broke his leg badly ; that was the last work he did, as he was then an old man, and the leg troubled him afterwards. The late Mr. Bourgoin married the second daughter (Catherine) of the late Martin Curran, of "The Wilows," Adelong, and together they reared a family of four sons and six daughters. His good wife predeceased him many years ago. The surviving members of the family are Alfred (Geraldton, W.A.), Martin (Meekatharra, W.A.), James (Wyndham, W.A.), Louis (Meekatharra, W.A.), Mrs. G. Wicht (Adelong), Mrs. A. Gravolin (Hurstville), Mrs. A. Wicht (Cootamundra), Mrs. A. Whitley (Adelong), Mrs. J. Dooley (Blakehurst, Sydney), Mrs. Maidmen (Surrey Hills). There are 45 grand children and one great-grandchild. Rev. Fr. H. J. Devine, P.P., conducted the last sad rites when his remains were placed in their last resting place in the Adelong Cemetery. The pallbearers were Messrs. James Curran (brother-in-law) Mat Curran (nephew). Tom Quilty (nephew), Alf Wicht (son-in-law), A. Dowsett and G. Gibson. The chief mourners present were his four daughters, sister-in-law (Mrs. Creelan, of Melbourne), Mrs. Quilty (niece). During his declining years and through his recent illness he was ten derly nursed by his daughter, Mrs. G. Wicht, who attended to his every need, and made the old gentleman as comfortable and happy as possible. Mr. Bourgoin was one of the very old members of Loyal Golden Age Lodge of Oddfellows, and every annual celebration it was one of the greatest pleasures of his life to at tend, and possessing a very sweet voice, he was one of the first called upon to sing. The local lodge of Oddfellows have had a particularly sad time of late, losing no less than six members in a short space of time.
