Found Dead in the Snow AN AUSTRALIAN ALPINE TRAGEDY. FATE OF MR MICHAEL SHANLEY. In our last issue we briefly alluded to fhe fact that Mr Michael Shanley had been reported missing at Kiandra on Wednesday last, and held out hopes that he would eventually turn up; but such, hopes were doomed not to be rea- lised, as on Saturday last his frozen body was found buried in the snow in a gorge near the head of Wallis' Greek, about four miles from Kiandra, writes the Adaminaby 'Advocate'. What really happened can only be conjec- tured, as 'Mick' was a thorough bush- man, knew the district thoroughly, and had had plenty of experience in snow. Early on Wednesday morning he was at the bridge over the Tumut River, near Lobb's Hole, and left Reich's place with the intention of proceeding to Kiandra, a distance of only twelve miles. He was mounted and leading a pack-horse, and, although the weather in the mountains, had been exceedingly rough since Sunday, no great difficulty was expected in getting through, especially to a man of Mack's experi- ence, as he had been up and down the mountain tracks for years in all weathers. This last trip down was in the way of being a droving record, as the deceased accompanied 2000 of Cheney's sheep from Providence to Lobb's Hole on the way to the Tum- barumba district, and never before had sheep travelled through the snow covered district at this time of the year. In going down, the sheep had to be driven through deep snow for miles, and to enable this to be done a trail had to be made, along which the sheep passed in single file, so the difficulty of travelling may be imagined. Having seen the sheep on to comparatively good travelling company, he was on his way back when he met his death. It is surmised that on the way up from Tumut River, as he gained the higher country the snow became deeper, and probably a heavy snowstorm had him bothered, as his tracks, which were found by those who were searching for him, crossed the trail in several places, showing that he had wandered round and round. He was a native of this district, be- ing a son of the late J Shanley, of Caddigat, about 62 years of age, and for his years very active and energetic. He was a good horseman, was honest and upright, and would go out of his way to do a good turn for his worst enemy. When the sad ne ws reached his rela- tives at Adaminaby arrangements were made to convey the corpse to this town for burial, and as it was impossible for a vehicle to get to Kiandra through the snow, it was decided to place the body on a sleigh and drag it to a point where the hearse and coffin awaited it. The scene was one which might iiave happened in the Arctic regions the group of relatives and friends, solemn and mournful; men and horses knee- deep in the snow; the country round about silent and gloomy, covered deep in its winter mantle; the hardy moun- taineers on their skis; and the poor body cold and stark in death on the sleigh. One could scarcely imagine such a setting in Sunny New South Wales. And how little do residents in other parts of the country know of the hard ships of winter in these Alpine regions. The mountains, which are the salva- tion of thousands of sheep and cattle during the summer months, are now covered, feet deep in snow; and miles and miles of country, which only a month or two back was thickly stocked with sheep and cattle, thriving on the lush growth of grass — whilst every few miles a hut or camp of stockman was to be found — is now given over to soli- tude. Andi it was in such a region that practically the whole of the in- habitants turned out to track down this missing man. Over hill and dale, across deep gullies now filled with the drifted snow, these men rode their snowshoes, tired out at night, and away again as soon as light permitted in the morning, in the hope that their neighbor would be found alive. And when the search was over those hardy and large-hearted men did not hesitate to yoke themselves to the sleigh and drag their dead friend nine miles fur- ther till the hearse was reached. After all, this is typical of the true Austra- lian mate-ship, the same spirit which overcame apparently insurmountable difficulties during the war and placed Australia on the highest pinnacle of fame. The corpse, after being placed an the coffin, was conveyed to St. Mary's Catholic Church, Adaminaby, where it remained till Monday afternoon, when the burial took place in the local ceme- tery. As the cortege left the church, followed by over 150 friendis of the de- ceased, a heavy fall of snow com- menced and continued whilst the mournfull -procession travelled to the cemetery. Very Rev Dean Norris PP, VF, of Cooma, performed the last sad rites at the graveside. The deceatsed was a brother-in-law of Mr John Russell (Cumburra), and step brother of Mr Mat Shanley (Caddigat.) and Mrs Cook (Adaminaby), to whom we extend our deepest sympathy. — R.I.P. |
