| - Notes: MR. MICHAEL KEEFE, SOUTH GUNDAGAI.
One of those splendid pioneers who have done so much to build up the prosperity and progress of the land of their adoption was Mr. Michael Keefe, who died recently at South Gundagai. It was 90 years ago that the deceased gentleman first saw the light of day in Tipperary, Ireland. He was but a baby in his in other's arms when in the year 1841 his parents landed in Australia. Settling at Darbalara, near Gundagai, the Keefe family remained there but a short period. Deceased's father went Wagga way and became overseer on 'Oura' station, and in 1861 settled at Wagragobilly. It was in the same year that the wanderlust attacked Mr. M. Keefe who went to New Zealand, where he remained for six years. Returning to Wagragobilly in 1867 he married and visited the Hunter River district where he remained till 1872. Deceased figured in the building of the main Northern line as far as Scone where the terminus was for some time. On returning to Wagragobilly in 1872, he took up land and successfully carried on until 1922 when he disposed of his property to Messrs. Bourke Bros, and settled at South Gundagai until his death. Until about two years ago Mr.Keefe was very active and possessed all his faculties until his death. He was a wonderful old man— one of those early colonists who watched Australia grow to nationhood. He was a man with a keen brain and an able organiser whose help and co-operation were eagerly sought in electioneering times. Summed up, Michael Keefe was one of that mighty band of pioneers whose courage, fealty to ideals, and enterprise conquered what to-day appear almost insurmountable difficulties. In every way he was one of nature's gentleman, and one who lived up to the ideals of his Church. His wife predeceased him six years ago. The following children mourn his loss: M. Keefe jnr. (Gundagai), Jas. Keefe (Gundagai), Mrs. Weir (Sydney), Miss J. Keefe (South Gundagai), Mrs. E. Potter (South Gundagai), Mrs. T. West (Sydney), Mrs. P. Kelly (Cowra), Mrs. P. Coughlin (Sydney), Mrs. J. Blumer (Sydney). One daughter, Mary Ann, died two years ago. There are 20 grand children and three great grandchildren. The funeral which was largely attended by representative citizens took place at Wagragobilly Catholic Cemetery, on 30 unto.
