The Late Mr. M. J. Murry.
A correspondent sends the following with reference to the late Mr. Michael J. Murry, of Glencoe Farm, Cooma:- Mr. Murry, who was the youngest of eleven, was born at the village of Cronah Hill, parish Phermoi, co. Cork, Ireland, on 25th May 1849, and was therefore 62 years of age at the time of his death. He came to Sydney when 17 years of age, then proceeded to Kiama, and after following farm work for 13 years in the Shoalhaven district, went to Goulburn with a racehorse, Matador. He also owned some excellent hackneys at Shoalhaven, and the racehorses Rosebud, Mignonette, Kathline, and Matador. At Goulburn, he joined, as foreman, the Railway Survey camp, which laid out the Cooma Railway Station, and he afterward settled in the district. Mrs. Murry, deceased's mother, owned a small farm, her father being Mr. William Brown, better known as Big Brown, of Arraglen, and her grandfather, Mr. Joseph Brown, whose estate situated on the River Bride. Mr. Murry's grandfather, Mr. James Murry, acted as agent and overseer of a well-known estate. Kill Murry; while Mr. Murry's fattier was a first cousin of Doctor Wm. and Mr. John O'Neill, of the Rock Estate, Phermoi. Among Mr. Murry senior's first cousins was also Mr. W. Chapman, who with Dr. W. O'Neill was a prominent figure in the hunting field. Mrs. Murry, the mother of Mr. M. J. Murry, was also related to the Messrs. McCarthy, Hayes, and Bibles, who were also famous in the saddle. The late Archbishop M. Quinn (Brisbane), Bishop Dunn (Bathurst), and Dean McCarthy, at one time of Sydney, were also relations. Mr. Murry leaves a widow; three daughters, one of whom is at the Convent of Mercy, Sydney; and four sons, the eldest being Clement Patrick. |
