Personal Notes:
Norman Selwyn, tenth child of Florence and Peter Johnson joined the family at Kuridalla in 1909. It was an eventful year - Juliana, future Queen of the Netherlands and Australian dancer and choreographer Robert Helpmann were born. Strauss's opera Elektra premiered in Dresden and Franz Lehar's The Count of Luxembourg opened in Vienna.
The French aviator Louis Bleriot took only 37 minutes to cross the English Channel flying from Calais to Dover! (Today's hovercraft do it in much the same time). Robert Peary reached the North Pole and Marconi won the Nobel Prize for Physics. In London women were able to have their hair permanently waved. The commercial manufacture of Bakelite marked the beginning of the Age of Plastics!
Norman was a bright student and attended State Schools at Selwyn, Cloncurry and Jarvisfield, then from 1923-27, boarded at Townsville Grammar School, as did his six brothers. So far as can be determined, no other family had as many representatives at the school as the seven Johnson boys!
All the brothers participated in various sports. For some time Norman held the Under 16 Broad Jump Record for North Qld Secondary Schools - but rugby league soon became the great love of his life.
Norman trained at Brisbane Teachers' College and gained a B.A degree. He taught at Babinda State School from 1929-1936; Ayr Primary School 1937-38; Ayr High and Intermediate School 1939-1945 and Pomona High 1945-46. Deciding he'd had enough of teaching Norman became a photographer in Brisbane, specialising in home studies and weddings. He also took action shots at The Valley pool and the Brisbane Exhibition - then began combining his love of sport and photography.
Since 1966 he has been official photographer for Cannon Hill Stars Junior Rugby League in Brisbane. Up to the start of the 1996 season had taken more than 36,000 photos of the juniors as well as recording match statistics. No wonder the club considers him "a walking encyclopaedia on Rugby League"!
For many years Norman was accompanied to matches by his loyal and well-loved companion "Bluey" who was so popular with players and officials alike they elected him a fully-fledged member of the club!
Carefully catalogued, Norman holds the negatives of every photo he has taken but has never charged one cent! His payment is the delight on the faces of the kids seeing themselves in action. Some of those whose early successes were captured on film by Norman include footballers Wally Lewis, Bob Lindner, Paul Kahl and swimming stars like Tracey Wickham, Lisa Curry-Kenny and Suzie Baumer.
Another of Norman's passions which takes up much of his time is genealogy. He began collecting data on his ancestors and compiling a family tree as far back as the 1950s. During that time he has unhesitatingly shared all his knowledge with interested relatives on both sides, compiling complex dossiers and reprinting old and faded photographs.
Many people have been pleased and fascinated by their own or their children's resemblance to ancestors in the old photos. Norman deserves our gratitude for his devotion to the task and to him "I dips me lid".
