| - Notes: I came across your excellent genealogy page while looking for info on Matilda Caroline Wreather who accompanied Penelope (Checkley) Bingham (and four children) as a Ladies Maid on a voyage from Ireland to Sydney in 1841
Penelope was the second wife of Henry Bingham and both feature in your genealogy. I’m looking for info on what Matilda did in the 15 month period between arriving in Sydney in March 1841 and marrying one of my ancestors (William Hipgrave – a compositor (printer) in Sydney, in June 1842). If Matilda went with the Binghams to Tumut, then how did she meet Hipgrave? Have you come across her in any stories from Tumut ? Here fyi is a cut from what I have written on Matilda and the Bingham family A year later, on 9 June 1842, William married Matilda Wreather in the Scots Church, Sydney.[1] Matilda Caroline Wreather had arrived in Sydney on the ship Canton on 18 Sept 1841. The ship left Plymouth on 18 May 1841 to collect Irish Immigrants from Cork and then set off for Sydney on 2 June.[2] On board were 207 Bounty Immigrants[3] plus paying passengers listed as: Mr.Bastian, Mr Caing, Rev Mr and Mrs Wilkinson and four children, Mrs Bingham and four children, Mr S. Harding, Mr T. Dwyer, Mrs White, Mrs Davis and child, Mr Addcock, Mrs Price, Mr O'Dell, Mr Thomas Ring, Mrs Ring, Mr W. Ring, Mr T. Stack, and Mr Maurice Stack.[4] The ship’s manifest records Matilda embarking in Cork, a 22yo Ladies Maid, and a Dublin born Protestant who can read and write.[5] She was one of the Bounty Immigrants and ‘under the protection of Mrs Bingham, wife of Comd [Henry] Bingham’, with her parents listed as William Wreather (Capt 59th Foot[6]) and Caroline Wreather.[7] The Mrs Bingham whom she accompanied was Penelope Mary (Checkley) Bingham (Mallow Ireland 1799 – Campbelltown, NSW 1891[8]) who was travelling with her four children: 17yo Charles Edward (1824-1876), 14yo Isabelle (1827-1899), 9yo Julia Henrietta (1832-1916) and 7yo Gertrude Clara (1834-1914). The first two were her stepchildren, born to Henry’s first wife Margaret Crene (or Craine or Creine 1801-1830[9]), the others were her own. (Charles Edward appears to have had a twin sister Gertrude who died as an infant while Penelope had a third daughter Grace who drowned in the Tumut River in Jan 1843[10] It appears Grace was swimming with one of the aboriginal girls who was working at Wollangawah (where they lived). Grace was on the older girls back and fell off. The aboriginal girl also drowned.[11]) Penelope was joining her husband Henry Bingham (Gloucester England 1797 – Tumut NSW 1852[12]) whom she had married in Aug 1831. Henry arrived in NSW on the Lady McNaughton in 1837 and was initially appointed a Commissioner of Crown Lands in District 5 at Cassilis.[13] By 1841 he had been transferred to District 7 based in Tumut, NSW,[14]so it is possible Matilda spent her initial period in NSW in that town. However, that begs the question – how and where did she meet William Hipgrave? Perhaps her services were no longer needed once the Canton arrived, and she left Mrs Bingham’s service and remained in Sydney. |
