District pioneer dies, aged 70 A pioneer of the Canberra district, Mr Thomas Andrew Corkhill, died in Canberra Hospital on Monday, aged 70. Mr Corkhill's father, Robert Corkhill came to Australia from the Isle of Man and worked for the Campbell family at Duntroon. In 1912 Robert Corkhill took over the dairy 'River-view' established by the Campbells during the 1880s. Born near the site of the present Parliament House, Thomas Corkhill was one of 10 children. He and his brother Pat took over 'Riverview' until the land was resumed for the de-velopment of Lake Burley Griffin in 1963. 'Riverview', a white two storey homestead, more than 70 years old, was demolished and the site now lies under the lake's west basin. Thomas Corkhill was a committee member of the first racing club of Canberra and officiated as starter at meetings held at the old Acton racecourse. Mr Corkhill who had been ill for some time, is survived by his wife, Elsie, And his seven children.
