Old South Head Rd, Waverley
Asenath and William Roberts, now described as a merchant, were still in Brisbane when the last child Annie Eugenie was born on 31 Mar 1864. An extract from Reminiscences of Maud Ward held in the Society of Australian Genealogists' Library says Annie "was a pianist at the age of nine. She was solo pianist at Ilma de Murska's concert in the building in Prince Alfred Park. She also played at the Garden Palace Exhibition in 1879." (The Garden Palace in Sydney was destroyed by fire in 1882). Ilma was a 40-plus Hungarian singer who came to Australia in July 1875. By December that year she had wed a 28 year old Melburnian who just happened to be an exceptional pianist (and free accompanist)! The fact that she was already married didn't bother Ilma at all. Understandably her new husband Alfred was upset that she sent the considerable amount of money she earned back to her daughter in Hungary, so he didn't go to Sydney with her and this is probably when Annie stepped into the breach. In Sydney on 21 ApI 1887 Annie wed Patrick O'CONNOR. The marriage certificate said he was born in Ireland, was aged 35, Roman Catholic and occupation 'land agent'. I found birth dates but nothing more for Mary 1887 who probably died in infancy as there was another Mary in 1889; Margaret 1895 and Kevin 1900. |
