The Tumut and Adelong Times 27 Nov 1928
DEATH OF MRS. JOHN QUINNELL SR. Quite a gloom was cast over this community on Saturday last, when, about mid-day, it became known that Mrs. J. Quinnell sr. had passed away. Few people were better known in this district, and up till about a week ago Mrs. Quinnell was in her usual state of health. She took bad, and rapidly failed. Dr. Wiles realised the seriousness of the position, and advised that her children be acquainted with the fact, which was accordingly done. The late Mrs. Quinnell, who had reached the good age of 76 years, was an Australian native, being born at Picton. When quite a little girl, her parents decided to move to the Tumut district, and accordingly came along in the then chief mode of travel, a bullock dray. When twelve years of age she came to Adelong to reside with her sister, the late Mrs. J. Hodson, whose husband kept the Commercial Hotel. It was then that she met the man who was destined to be her future husband through life, Mr. John Quinnell. They were married from the Commercial Hotel and have lived in Adelong ever since, where they gained the respect and esteem of all who knew them. The late Mrs. Quinnell was a fond mother of seven children, and her husband and family were her first thought. Notwithstanding rearing a large family, Mrs. Quinnell was a wonderfully kind neighbor, and always ready and willing to help and assist the sick and needy. Many a score of times has she left her peaceful home to go and assist those in need of nursing attention, and cheery words and help. Together with her husband (who survives her, but is in a very bad state of health at present) they reared their family to man's and woman's estate, the children left to mourn the loss of their dear old mother being Jack (Ardlethan), Harry (Goulburn), Duncan (Adelong), Mrs. Gravolin (Har den), Mrs. Hayden (Sydney), Archibald (Sydney), Mrs Sims (Adelong). A great number of friends and relations followed the remains to the Adelong Cemetery on Sunday last, where Rev. Jas. Walton (Presbyterian) conducted the last sad rites. |
