Personal Notes:
RICHARD BARNES, Hotelkeeper is a son of Richard Barnes, of Wynbun and Dorsetshire, England, and was born in 1825 in NSW. He visited Monaro over forty years ago to become the manager of a cattle station, the property of his Father, which he retained for a period of fourteen years. For seventeen years he kept a hotel, during which time he followed the occupation of a sheep farmer. He then erected his present Hotel. Mr. Barnes is a large property-holder; he has 11,000 acres of freehold and C.P. land, which his son Richard H. Barnes manages as a sheep station, having the charge of 11,000 sheep. This estate is valued at 25,000 pound. Always taking an interest in the welfare of the district and the inhabitants thereof, Mr. Barnes was instrumental in gaining for the people a sixty acre reserve for punt purposes on the Snowy River and a pound reservation of 200 acres He gave the land on which is erected the Buckley's Crossing Church, and succeeded in having the present Post Office established.
