Husband of Margaret (nee Parker, later Curtis).
'Inquest at Goodgood. Mr. H. DAWSON, Coroner for Cooma, held an inquest on the body of Richard Thurban, senior, at his late residence, Goodgood, on New Year's Day, touching the death of deceased, who committed suicide by hanging. Deceased had been ill for many months past, had suffered much from a bad leg, and though he had received great attention from an affectionate wife and every possible care, he grew weary of life. He was an old, respected resident of the district. Jury: James Dinnen (foreman), Thomas Morriss, Patrick McDonald, Thomas Sutherland, Simon Corey, John Corey, Patrick Brosnan. Margaret Thurban, sworn, stated: I am the widow of the deceased; my daughter got up early this morning and told me she could not see her father; I ran round to the window of his bedroom and looked in; I saw the deceased's legs hanging near the window; I could not see his body; I screeched out, being in a great fright, and called his sons, who went into the room and found deceased; I afterwards saw deceased dead, but quite warm; yesterday evening deceased was in good spirits, but at times he used to say he wished the Lord would take him; deceased when ill used to say he would take his life, and made one or two attempts to do so. Joseph Parker, sworn, stated: I am a selector living at Goodgood; I was at Goodgood early this morning; about 5 o'clock this morning I heard a female screeching out; I jumped out of bed and ran to deceased's room there I found deceased hanging; with the assistance of his son we took the body down and found he was dead; I am a brother-in-law to deceased, and caused the matter to be reported to the proper authorities; the deceased had attempted his life before; I think the noose was near the right ear. John Clifford, sworn, stated: I am a legally qualified medical practitioner residing at Cooma; I have made a post mortem examination on the body of Richard Thurbon, senior; I found marks of a rope round the neck, which presents all the appearance of strangulation; the mark on the neck is double and very much indented; I believe the deceased died from strangulation, but from the appearance of the body I do not think he was very long hanging. The jury returned the following verdict:— "That the deceased, Richard Thurban, senior, died on the 1st day of January, A.D. 1881, from strangulation through hanging". Deceased was buried on Monday. He was 64 years of age. Much regret is expressed in the district for the unfortunate occurrence'.
