OBITUARY
MRS. FRANK BOURKE After two years bedridden, Mrs. Annie Bourke, of East Blowering, relict of the late Francis Bourke, passed away at her residence on Sunday morning at 8.15, a happy release from long suffering, during which she had every medical attention and the kindly and unremitting care of her two daughters, assisted towards the end by friendly neighbours. Deceased was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Hugh O'Neill, who came from Howlong, where she was born, when she was quite a little girl. She was 78 years of age. Forty-two years ago she married Francis, elder son of the late William Bourke of East Blowering, and there are two surviving daughters (Misses Mary and Katie) and one son, Frank, to the union, twins having died when quite young. They lived happily together in the old homestead where the parents dwelt the greater part of their lives. The subject of this obituary was a most loveable and estimable woman, a devout Catholic, an indefatigable worker for her church and in the sweet cause of charity, and her home was a real pivot of kindly and generous hospitality. There was no cause for which the assistance of her husband and herself were appealed to for help that did not meet with wholehearted response, and their popularity was not only district but State-wide. It was the commencement of a trying ordeal for her daughters as well as for herself from the time she was stricken down with illness until her demise; but nothing was left undone that tended to the relief of the patient or to give her comfort, and she received the spiritual ministrations of her priestly head, Very Rev. Dean Sharkey, and assistant priests as well as the Sisters of Mercy from St. Brigid's Convent. The world is poorer indeed by her passing and profound sympathy goes out to the family as well as other relatives in their sad bereavement. One brother (Thos. O'Neill, Bombowlee) and a sister, Maggie (Mrs. King, Sydney), also survive. Mrs. Tim Quilty (Bondi) and Mr. William Bourke (East Blowering, and resident with the family), are sister-in-law and brother-in-law. The casketed remains were brought in to the Church of the Immaculate Conception on sunday at 5. 30 p.m. and were let lie in state in the church. On Monday morning a Requiem Mass was celebrated by Dean Sharkey, and prior to the funeral at 3.30 in the afternoon a short service was held and prayers offered up for the repose of her soul. The cortege, which wended its way to the Roman Catholic portion of the Tumut New Cemetery, was a very lengthy one and the coffin was covered with a plethora of beautiful wreaths, tributes to the regard and esteem in which the deceased was held by all sections of the community. Very Rev. Dean Sharkey conducted the burial service and the pallbearers were Messrs Frank Bourke (son), Allan J. Dowling, Kevin Halloran, Reg. and Bed Madigan and B. Hayden. Messrs W. H. Fuller and Son were the undertakers. The Tumut and Adelong Times (NSW : 1864 - 1867; 1899 - 1950)Tuesday 8 December 1936 |
