The Boat people of the 1850s had a tough time, Susan Jackson her parents and her siblings arrived in Australia onboard the ill-fated Beejapore on 6 January 1853. Fifty six passengers died during the voyage including Susan's youngest sister. A further 62 died while in quarantine at North Head. On twenty first February 1853, four days after being released from quarantine, thirty two year old Elizabeth Jackson, her mother was hit by a horse and cart while crossing George Street and killed. Her youngest daughter Mary, who had been born during the voyage died on the second March also as a result of this accident, Elizabeth and Mary were buried in the Devonshire Street cemetery[1]. In 1854, Robert Jackson, married Amelia Fillingham and moved to Queanbeyan taking eight year old Susan with them, while her fifteen year old sister Mary Ann remained in Sydney with her uncle William Coates who had a butcher shop in York Street and his family.
