Personal Notes:
Author of ‘Tour of the Southern Mountains (1840)’

STEWART RYRIE, Junior, was born at Caithness, Scotland, in about 1812. He arrived in New South Wales in 1826, and in the early forties had arrived on Manaro, where in 1845, he was managing Coolringdon for Dr. F. L. Wallace. When the general list of applicants for leases of Runs was gazetted in 1848 his name appears in respect of Cootalandra 7,600 acres, and Jindabyne East, 13,000 acres. In 1847 he established at Jindabyne the first flour mill known on Manaro. The mill was operated by the waters of the Snowy River, and for some number of years was conducted by Mr. William Jardine. In 1865 he disposed of his Jindabvne property to Mr. Throsby and remained on Manaro till 1873. He died in 1883, leaving a family of three sons and four daughters by his marriage with Janet, daughter of Colonel J. K. McKenzie, of the 4th Queens Own Regiment. A daughter, Miss Amy A L. Ryrie, for a number of years was matron of "The Terraces" Private Hospital, Sydney.
