The Aston Aston, Warwickshire Census of Sunday 30th March, 1851 shows the family living at Bordesley Green House, Aston. (PRO Ref: HO/107/2060 Folio 670 Page 17 FHL Film 0087316.) Details of children’s names, ages and birth places were taken from the Census. George was a ‘Scholar’ and the other six children were ‘Scholars at Home’ . They had a 23 year old house servant called Phoebe Davis. The family was very musical and artistic.
Thomas is noted as being at the time of the Census, a coal merchant. This is also noted on his daughter Maria's marriage certificate. On his death certificate his profession is named as scalemaker. Thomas's only brother was a clergyman. Thomas Bourne and his family left Birmingham for a new life in Australia. It must have been sometime after the census in March, 1851. He died from ‘consumption’ in Launceston, Tasmania on 13th January, 1852, aged 54 years. He would have been in Australia only months. He must have had consumption or TB, when he left England and they were hoping a change of climate would help his health. After Thomas died, Ann would have been left with all the children to raise alone, her youngest child only 5. The elder children would have had to support the family. There is a stirling silver spoon which belonged to the Bourne family. The leopard's head uncrowned shows it was made between 1821 and 1890. The m shows it was actually made between 1827 and 1828. It was probably part of a cutlery set given as a wedding present to the couple. There is a Coat of Arms - T. Bourne 1798, the year of Thomas’ birth. A Benjamin Bourne went to Philadelphia, America in 1848 with his wife and two young sons. He was born and grew up in Birmingham. His great grandfather was Richard Bourne born 1742/3 in Burslem, Staffordshire. In 1850’s a Clara Jane Bourne was born at King’s Norton near Birmingham to John Bourne an electroplater |
