The Tumut and Adelong Times 7 Jun 1866
Obituary. — On the 11th of January last, it devolved upon us to chronicle the demise of the wife of Mr. Thomas Gelling, of this town, and it now becomes our painful duty to announce his death, at the age of 59 years, which occurred on Monday, at about 11 o'clock. The funeral took place on the following day shortly after 2 p.m., and was attended by a large number of mourners. The burial service of the Anglican Church was read on the occasion by the Rev. C. J. Byng in a very impressive manner and was calculated to force upon the minds of his bearers that thrilling fact written by Pope, "The hour concealed, and so remote the fear Death still draws nearer, never seeming near." Much sympathy is shown by those more immediately connected with the deceased's family, and we are glad to see this consolation afforded, for though we know they must submit to the inscrutable workings of Providence, it is a hard trial, more especially in this case, to have one bereavement follow so closely on the other.
