Personal Notes:

Thomas Oakman was a farmer, from records found he also owned a store at Umbango and The Humula Hotel before the bush fire of 1905. The Hotel was built by Bob Cheney. Joe Hughes was its first publican. Later Thomas Oakman became the owner but unfortunately the great bushfire of 1905 that destroyed almost the entire area of Humula, Umbango, Oberne & Tarcutta also destroyed the Hotel.

There are two distinct branches of Oakman in Australia - those who came from Ireland and those who came from England. The Oakman families that came from England were closely related (brothers and cousins) who arrived in Australia in 1853 and 1857.

Thomas Oakman's family had been agricultural labourers in Little Thetford and other villages in Cambridgeshire for centuries. In 1853 jobs were scarce and Australia was desperate for people to work on the land to provide food for the fast growing population.

In 1853, Thomas Oakman and his brother William Oakman, along with their families arrived in Sydney on the ship "Blundell". They came from the Cambridge, Ely area of England.Thomas Oakman and his wife, Elizabeth, spent several years in Sydney before eventually settling near Humula. William and his wife, Ann, settled at Tumbarumba.

Another William Oakman, a cousin of Thomas and William, arrived in Victoria in April 1853 aboard the ship "Confiance" with his wife, Anne and infant son Henry. They settled in the Geelong area. This William died in 1860. Absalom Oakman, another cousin of Thomas and William, arrived in 1857 with his wife, Elizabeth, and infant daughter, Susan, aboard the ship "Boanerges". Absalom and his wife, Elizabeth, spent time in both Sydney and Newcastle, and Absalom died in 1910 at Parramatta, NSW

Thomas Oakman, his wife Elizabeth (Money) and 3 of their children arrived in Australia on 5 May 1853 aboard the ship "Blundell" which had left Plymouth on 17 January 1853. Thomas was 29 years of age, Elizabeth was 30, their children were: Thomas aged 4 (born 1849- died 1929), Mary age 3 (born 1850), Richard an infant (born 1852-died 1927). Thomas could read and write but Elizabeth could only read.

William (brother of Thomas) and his family were also on the ship.
William was 38 and like Thomas was a farm labourer from Thetford, Cambridgeshire.
He could read but not write as could his wife Anne 39. Their sons Thomas 17 and William 12 accompanied them.

The Oakman families settled in Bankstown, Sydney for nearly 20 years before moving south to Umbango. By which time Thomas & Elizabeth had another 7 children. Their son John Money was born 1858 at Bankstown. His son Reuben Money Thornell Oakman born 1891 was later educated at Humula & Keymba Public School. Later in life he enlisted in WW1, his record stated his rank as Private in the 17th battalion 1914-1918 war. At age 26 he was killed in action 3 May 1917 at Bullecourt and is buried Villers-Bretonneux France.
