Personal Notes:
UK Census 1851 : Apprentice Piano Forte (probably maker & tuner) Born London Middlesex in 1837

Fathers name : William Bennett born 1805 and was a cabinet maker. Born at East Tisted Alton Hants

Mothers name : Elizabeth Born 1803 at London Middlesex

Walter had a sister Anne born 1835, and Kate born 1840

Walter arrived in Australia on Hindostan 12th Feb 1857 (as did John James Cramp whilst the rest of the Cramp family arrive on Glen Ilsa in a little later in 1857.)

Walters occupation at time of immigration was given as Carpenter.

[Of interest is that other passengers on Hindostan were William Dear (age 21) & Henry Tillage all of whom married Cramp girls) William Bennett's occupation being shown as Farm Servant)]

All the above arrived at Sydney.

There was no work available and Walter Bennett (I believe although the reference was W B) with John James Cramp went to New Zealand looking for work. I don't know the ship or when either returned.

I have a letter (rather unreliable I believe) from Frederic Bennett dated 1969 saying Walter Bennett was with Railways, at Ipswich and rose to Forman. Frederick goes on to say that Walter was "absent" from the family for long periods of time. I have not been able to verify that he was with Railways or even what line he worked on. I have deduced that he worked on the Toowoomba line as Marianne Bennett's second son was born 1865 at Drayton, third son born 1867 at Drayton and 4th Son born 1868 at Drayton. (The line was not completed between Brisbane & Ipswich until 1867 although the line out of Ipswich was under way in 1865) Remember that John Cramp was appointed as Telegraph Station master at Banana 1st Jan, 1865. I am not certain when Marianne went to Banana but there were 2 more children (father unknown) and the first was registered as a Cramp Bennett and the last was registered as Cramp. I also do not know if Walter Bennett ever went to Banana.

The birth of the last son for Marianne Bennett in 1874 does make it plausible that Walter Bennett (if he was the father) may have been alive in Australia till late 1873.

Walter Bennett married Marianne Cramp 5th Feb 1861 105 Princes Street, Sydney. Father shown as William Bennett, Mother shown as Elizabeth Hawks. Witnesses were John James Cramp & Sophia M Cramp.

Their first son died with Sophia Matilda Cramp (grand mother) on the Cawarra ship wreck off Newcastle in 1866. (he was Walter John F Bennett). Father shown as Walter Bennett. Occupation shown as "Overseer of tea plantation ?" (Query is on form). Informant R.C.Knaggs, Coroner, Newcastle & H J Tillidge, Uncle of deceased, Victoria St Sydney.

The following was supplied to me : I was told by Lucy Schneider(Bennett) that he was thought to have died from a poisonous bite. He left Australia maybe about 1870 and on a document, I think a baptismal certificate, he was described as a tea planter in Assam, India. Lucy thought it may have been in Malaya but perhaps it was in Assam.

Then in the above mentioned letter of 1969 Frederic says " he (Walter Bennett) eventually died soon after John Cramp (Pip adds, and that was 1873) from being bitten on his back by a scorpion or centre pede"

I have been to Banana & have a good photograph of John Cramp & Marianne Cramp headstone. Walter Bennett's stone is in very bad condition. The thing is that this Walter has his birth recorded as CRAMP and according to Frances Lawrence, now about 90, Walter Bennett who I cant find had an argument with John Cramp before Drayton days and left Marianne. After John Cramps death in 1873, Walter (born 1837) came back to Marianne & then this child was born 1874. It could be true.
