Obituary.
Mr. William Egan.
A feeling of deep and sincere regret was felt in Gunnedah and district when it was announced that Mr. William Egan, of 'Rosewood,' Emerald Hill and eldest son of the late William and Ann Egan of Erinvale, Gocup, had passed away at his Sydney residence at Stanmore on Tuesday morning, 13th instant. The late Mr. Egan went to the Gunnedah district some 50 years ago, where he gained the esteem and respect of a wide circle of friends.
Mr. Egan was one of the first to grow wheat in the Gunnedah district and he had a wide knowledge of land and stock values. Deceased had lived a particularly active life until October of last year, when he felt the first symptoms of an illness which proved subsequently fatal. The passing of Mr. Egan removes yet another of those genial, large hearted pioneers who have done so much for their country, as well as the immediate district. During his illness, Mr. Egan was frequently visited by the Right Monsignor King, P.P. (Stanmore) and Rev. Father Kenny ; the Sisters of Mercy were frequent visitors. Two daughters predeceased him, Sister Mary Raymond of the Convent of Mercy, Singleton and Nurse Annie Egan, whose tragic death took place at the Quarantine Station, Sydney, in 1918, when Nurse Egan had nobly volunteered to tend the victims of pneumonic influenza. A widow and seven children survive to mourn the loss of a devoted husband and father. The sons are Messrs W. J. and M. J. Egan (Emerald Hill) ; the daughters are Sister M. Vincent (Convent of Mercy, Gunnedah), Sister M. Alphousus (Convent of Mercy, Moree), Miss K. Egan (Emerald Hill), Miss L. Egan (Education Department), Mrs. W. Rein (Annandale). Deceased is a brother of Mr. J. Egan of Snowball and Mr. M. Egan of Tarcutta and at one time kept the Tumblong Hotel."
