William Glanville was a convict who arrived in NSW aboard the ship "John" on 8 June 1832. William, together with James Brewer and John Rowse, were tried and convicted of breaking into a store in Stoke Dameral, owned by William Williams, and stealing 34 knives valued at 6d. each, 24 snuffboxes valued at 8d. each, 37 watch jewells valued at 1s. each, 18 broaches valued at 9d. each, 2 pair of ear drops valued at 8s. a pair, 2 strings of coral beads valued at 8s. and 47 rings valued at 4d. each. The offence occured on 27 April 1831. Their trial was held at the Devon Assizes 23 July 1831 and they were all sentenced to 14 years transportation.
John Brewer's wife Mary was also tried and convicted of receiving stolen goods and also sentenced to 14 years transportation. A second indictment was for stealing 7 pairs of shoes valued at 4s. each from Christopher Oldfield On his arrival in the colony, William was assigned to Joseph Ward of Airdsnear Campbelltown and it was not long before Joseph Ward sent him on to his property "Wambrook" on the Monaro. William was granted a Ticket Of Leave, no.39/692, on the 8th April 1839 and he was granted a Certificate of Freedom, no.47/293, on the 23 March 1847. |
