Noted events in his life were:
• History: William was born about 1803 in Cahir ( near Clonmel) Tipperary, Ireland. He was a ploughman by trade but it seems he was a rogue in trouble with the law on more than one occasion. In 1828 he robbed a house in Tubrid (near Cahir) owned by Mr Palmer, in company of Thomas Dorney and Micharl Lonergan. I believe there was a shoot out in a grave yard nearby. At any rate, William was convicted in the Tipperary Assizes, sentenced to Life and was transported on the "Eliza", leaving Cork 2 March 1829 and arriving Port Jackson 20 June 1829. He was variously described as having "fresh", "fair", and "freckled" complexion," brown" hair, and "blue", or "grey" eyes, and was 5 feet 8 inches tall with a scar on his nose noted in 1843. William was assigned to William Bell in the Hunter region- on the 700 acre run "Chesunt Park" between Singleton and Musswellbrook- south of Liddell. Bell sold Cheshunt in 1845. He then moved to another of Bell's properties "Keepit Station" Manilla. This was a large run on the Namoi River upstream from the village of Carroll. Today the run is submerged beneath Keepit Dam. In 1835 William married Bertha Nash, a full blood Aborigine from the Kamilaroi Nation who also worked on Keepit, most likely as a housemaid. Daughter Jane was born on Keepit abt 1836 and son John in 1840. A Ticket Of Leave was granted 2 Nov 1837 and renewed for some reason 27 Apr 1841 to stay in the Scone district. It seems that William and Bertha separated- it is not known what happened to Bertha but thought she went back to her tribe. William was given a conditional pardon 15 Mar 1845 and died on Keepit in 1850. |
