OBITUARY MR. B. B. BENNETT The death occurred on Tuesday, at the residence of his daughter, 16 Clanalpine street, Mosman, of Mr. Barnett Basil Bennett, formerly of Brucedale Park, Wagga, in his 92nd year. Mr. Bennett had lived away from Wagga for a considerable portion of the last 20 years, though he was a frequent visitor at annual shows, Gold Cup meetings, and other important functions. He was one of those who returned in "Back to Wagga" week, held almost two years ago. He was one of the oldest identities of the district. Mr. Bennett was born in England on August 4, 1838, and when he was only a month old his parents left for New South Wales. His father died within three months of reaching Sydney. Mrs. Bennett again married and came with her husband, Mr. Marshall, her son Basil, and her daughter, who afterwards became Mrs. Matt. Sawyer to the Wagga district, which they reached on October 3, 1840. For Mr. Bennett was claimed the distinction of being the first white baby to arrive on the Murrumbidgee on the site which is now Wagga. From that time, although he wandered about Riverina considerably, Wagga was always his home. In 1847, though but a boy, he helped to put in the first wheat that was grown in the district, eight acres being put in near Pomingalarna. He acquired considerable property in the course of years and farmed a large area at Brucedale, rearing a large family. One son was Colonel A. J. Bennett, who saw active service in the Soudan, African and Euro- pean wars. Mr. Bennett took a keen interest in all the public institutions of the town and district, including the Farmers and Settlers' Association, and the Murrumbidgee Milling Co., of which he was a director for a considerable time.

- Notes: On the Wagga Wagga site, the first crop was said to have been grown in 1846 (7). Basil B. Bennett, who came to the region in 1840 with his step-father Anthony Marshall, superintendent on John Bray's Berry Jerry run, claimed that he prepared the ground for this first crop with a bullock-drawn plough. (aged 8??) This was probably the site noted on Townsend's 1849 plan (Figure 2) as 'Best's Cultivation Paddock'.
