POLICE COURT. TUESDAY, APRIL 25, 19x6. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. (Before Mr. Irish, J.P.) George Martin was charged with attempting to commit suicide at Uriarra on Saturday; 22nd April, 1916. Mounted Constable Coyle, sta tioned at Gininderra, stated : About 5.30 a.m. on the 22nd April from something I heard I proceeded along 'the Uriarra-Fairlight Road about three quarters of a mile from Mr. George Webb's Fairlight Station, and found the accused lying with his head in a gutter. His body being up on the road. He had apparently been lying there for some time. Rolled him over and found him to be alive, al though stiff. I worked the body when he frothed from the nose and mouth. He spoke and I said, What is your name? He replied, George Martin. I said, What is wrong with you ? He replied, What do you want to know for. I said, Do you know me? He replied, Yes, I do: the girl died for me, and I b---- well want to die for her. I said, What girl ? He replied, Bernice Blundell. I said, Why do you want to die? He replied, I took half a bottle of strychnine about two hours ago and I'm not dead yet; I'll give any b'-----' a quid who'll shoot me ; if I can get a hold of another dose I will take it ; go away for Christ's sake and let me die. Then got a cart and removed him to his room at Mr. Webb's Fairlight Station. Searched the room occupied by accused and found two bottles containing stry chnine. Produce the bottles, one containing white crystal grains and the other pink; also an open state ment I found lying in a tin trunk in his room. Also produce a written statement and a letter addressed to Mrs. John Martin, Hillgrove, Wee. Jasper, via Yass. Another unstamped letter was. addressed to Mr. Geo, Webb, Fairlight. The statement on the envelope bore the words, "I'm taking my life for a girl". Another envelope was addressed to Miss Mar nol. This contained a watch chain and two rings, also a purse, contain. ing 9d. The letter addressed to Mrs. Jon Martin contained a one pound note and five penny stamps. Ac cused did not see me open the letters, but admitted having written them. He then said, Who told you they were mine? I replied, You have already admitted they were yours. He said, If I did you tell. George Webb he can have my four horses, he has been a good fellow to me. In the presence of Mr. Webb, who as assisted to carry Martin from the cart to his room I searched the accused but found nothing of any danger in his pockets, but after the arrival of Constable Brown from Queanbeyan we had a further search and found a small tin and another bottle of stry chnine in his pocket. Asked him where he got the tin and bottle from and he replied under the bed between the mattress. Accused then said, I'Il take another dose if I get a chance. Asked him how long he had the strychnine in his possession and he replied about five months; I got it from a man named Hall for poisioning foxes and rabbits. Asked him who Hall was and he said, You know Charnwood Hall. When I first saw him he was bereft of his senses, but when Constable. Brown arrived he seemed to be getting ra tional. Sidney Longden Richardson, Go ernment Medical Officer, stated : On Saturday morning I received a phone message from Fairlight to come at once that a man had poisoned him self. On arrival at Fairlight I saw the accused in his own room. He appeared to be very confused, was maudlin drunk, and signs of vomit ing were about the place. I came to the conclusion that he had drunk a lot of whisky and evidently had taken some strychnine by tipping the bottle into his mouth. There was no con vulsions of any kind. Was present when Constables Coyle and Brown searched him. He repeatedly said, "The girl died for me and I think it's up to me that I should die for her ; I mean to do it if I get half a chance. Otherwise accused spoke rationally. Sent him into Quean beyan with Constable Brown and again saw him on my arrival it town, At the lockup I discovered symptoms of poisoning but not sufficient to cause convulsions. He has now re covered, from the effects of strychnine and drink, but I do believe that un less he had been found in the morn ing he would have died on the road side. Accused pleaded guilty and elected to be summarily dealt with. He was fined £1 and ordered to pay £4/4/- doctors expenses and cost of car hire £2/10/6
