CHARLES WAIN AND SUSANNA DUCKETT Charles Wain, the son of John and Catherine Wain, was born in 1821 his christening date being the 23rd September, 1821 at Twycross, Leicestershire. John's occupation in 1862 was recorded as Agricultural Labourer.
He married Susanna (Mary) Duckett at the parish church in the Parish of Exhull in the County of Warwick, England. Susanna, the daughter of Thomas Duckett and Susannah Perkins, (The marriage certificate records their age as Charles 40, and Susanna 39 - this marriage was witnessed by Thomas Wain who was unable to sign his name). Susanna was born in 1823 and christened on the 20th June, 1824 at Claydon, Oxfordshire. Her death certificate -(information supplied by her husband) states that she was born at Claydon, Buckinghamshire. Her father, Thomas, was occupied as a Boatman in 1862. (There appears to be some contradictory data concerning Susanna - her christening certificate records her parents as Thomas and Mary, and her death certificate records them as Thomas.and Sussannah, the 1851 census of England records her name as Mary). Charles and Susanna with their eldest children, migrated to Queensland on the ship 'Sultana', arriving in Brisbane on the 1st November, 1862. The family later moved to the Dalby area where they settled and made their home - Charles finding work. as a gardener. In 1893 Charles made application to select Agricultural Farm 571 in the County of Lytton, Parish of Chinchilla at the purchase price of 15/- per acre. His application to become the Lessee of the crown lands described above, was signed on the 15th June, and under the provisions of "The Crown Lands Act of 1884 Amendment Act of1885" he tendered the sum of £4 as the first year's rent, and £2 for the Provisional Survey Fee. This 160 acre farm, which adjoined the railway line, had dense scrub of Myrtle, Brigalow, Oak, Lime and Sandlewood scattered throughout. The above application was confirmed by the Land Board on the 19th February, 1894, and theLicense to Occupy which was dated the 9th March, 1894. Charles died on the 31st October, 1893, after having signed his last Will on the 24th July, 1893 only threemonths prior to his death - his daughter-in-law, Ellen Wain (John's wife), being his sole beneficiary. In February, 1899 the lease of farm 571 was forfeited for failure to pay the annual rent. Susanna died on the 29th August, 1871 at St Ruth, a small town outside Toowoomba. fIer cause of death being congestion of lungs. Susanna was only 46 years of age at the time of her death and some of her children were still only teenagers. She was buried at Dalby on the 30th August, 1871. After Charles died at 'Forest Park' on the 31 st October, 1893 in his 77th? year, his mortal remains were buried in the Dalby Cemetery on the 1st November, after a service conducted by the Church of England minister Rev. Walter Phillips. |
