Personal Notes:
David Crampton 2nd was one of the early farmers on Tumut Plains on land rented from Richard Sturt. After a few years he purchased 25 acres of good soil on which he erected a new home. Later he bought an additional farm from the Wermatong sub-division.

He was the first farmer in the district to grow broom millet, a crop which is still being grown on the farm by his grandson Harry Crampton. Later in his old age David Crampton handed over the farm to his son William Henry Crampton. The Cramptons were among the best farmers in the district. Both William Henry Crampton and his son Harry Crampton were
tireless workers for the Show Society at Tumut.

Frederick Crampton, the son of David Crampton the second, was the only other Crampton to carry on as a farmer. Edward Crampton for most of his life was employed as a maintenance man on roads in the district, whilst Harry Crampton, Sidney Crampton and Charles Crampton were all butchers.

Bruce Crampton, the international golfer of the 1960s, 1s a great, great grandson of David Crampton and Augustus Crampton. Bruce's father was Hector Crampton, a Superintendent of Police, and the son of Sidney Crampton.

David Crampton died at Tumut on 10 November 1926 aged seventy-one and wife Sarah died on 4 January 1929 aged seventy. Their son William Henry died on 17 October 1964 aged eighty years.

DEATH OF MR. DAVID CRAMPTON
A gloom was cast over the Plains when the news was circulated that Mr. David Crampton had breathed his last. The deceased was a fine type of man and was respected by all who came in contact with him. He was born in the town of Tumut, and at an early age worked on the gold fields at Adelong, Poverty Gully (Batlow), Sandy Creek, Lacmalac and other fields. At the age of 20 he went to work at Wermatong Station and for a number of years was employed there. He was married at 24 years to a daughter of the late Augustus Lefevre. He commenced farming, on the farm where Mr. Frank Malone sr. now resides, remaining there 10 years, then moving up to a farm of the late Richard Sturt's, where he resided for 16 Years. Afterwards he purchased the property where he resided until his death. Deceased was one of the oldest maizegrowers in the district, and was a practical farmer in every sense of the term. His farm was always kept in a model manner and was conspicuous for its freeness from weeds of any kind, his homestead and barns being models a tidiness, with a place for everything, and everything went into its place after use. He was a good counsellor, his advice being sound and reliable, and if any one was in trouble he was the first to come along — in sickness a ministering angel. In any functions held on the plains be was the first to lend assistance and his donation was always given freely and liberally, and in most cases was given before he was approached. He was truly a man among men. For a number of years he was President of the local Progress Association, and in this regard he was a tower of strength. A member of the Tumut A. and P. Association for many years, during that time he won a great number of prizes, also At Gundagai and Batlow Shows and at the R.A.S., Sydney. At the latter he won for maize on several occasions. In fact, to defeat David Crampton with with a bag of maize was considered a great feat. He also held certificates of merit from the FrancoBritish Exhibition. As a husband and father he could not be surpassed, and losing him his wife and children have lost a model husband and devoted parent, while the Plain's have lost a fine citizen. A wife, one son and two daughters are left to mourn their irrepairable loss. The children are Mr. W. H Crampton (Tumut Plains), Mrs. M. Green (Tumut Plains) and Mrs. P. McAlister (Wereboldern) . We join with othersin extending to them our heartfelt sympathy in their hour of trial. The funeral, which was one of the largest seen on the Plains for some time, took place on Wednesday last. Messrs Fuller and Burt carried out the mortuary duties, and Rev. T. A. Gair officiated at the grave in the Church of England portion of the Tumut New Cemetery.
