- Notes: Before I knew of the Chown connection, I had been looking literally for years for
John Bowcher's wife recorded as Deborah HILL - but drew a blank everywhere.
She was not in the IGI and I could find no trace whatsoever of this mystery
woman.
In a letter to a modern day Chown, I commented that there fust had to be some
earlier Chown connection. This remark made him compare dates to find that

Henry and Anne's eldest daughter DEBORAH CHOWNE baptised 18 May 1727
was in fact the widow Hill. She had firstly married William Hill in 1746 when aged
19 then ten years later, on 11 Aug 1756 at Exminster, wed JOHN BOWCHER.
The family as we know it is descended directly from John and Deborah and
details will be found in the chapter dealing with the BOWCHER family.

During my early research into the Bowchers I felt there must be earlier, strong
connections to the Chowne family other than those I'd discovered in the 1780s, as
some of the Bowcher children had Chown/e as a second Christian name, implying
a close link. It really made my day when I found Deborah Hill was a widow, the
daughter of Ann and John CHOWNE, yeoman farmer of Spurway Farm at Exminster.
