| - Notes: Donald McGruer was born at Invernesshire, Scotland. In company with Donald McGillivary he worked his passage to Australia as a ship's carpenter aniving in 1848. He worked at his trade at Parramatta until 1850 and then went to Adelong Crossing where he engaged in flour milling. In 1850 Donald McGruer's stepmother and brother Alexander also came to Tumut.
The McGruer brothers went to the Kiandra gold rush but soon returned and in 1860 bought a farm of 80 acres at Gilmore. They had this for only a brief period and then purchased 4,300 acres from Bray Brothers at Brungle. It was the original holding taken up by John Keighran. They built the area up until it comprised 5,000 acres. It is still owned by descendants of the original McGruers. In 1885 Donald McGruer married Miss Dora Vogel of Gundagai. There were four sons; > Donald Alexander McGruer, > Ernest Neil McGruer, > David John McGruer, > William Fraser McGruer. and two daughters; > Dorothy McGruer (married H. Druce), > Jessie McGruer. Donald built his home on the property and called it "Delcray". Alex built on another portion of the station and called his place "Bonnie Doon". He and his wife Margaret conducted the first Post Office and store there. They had no family. The old homestead is still standing and is now (in 1967) occupied by John D. McGruer. The McGruer brothers bred merino sheep and shorthorn cattle. In 1900 they leased the property to A.B. Triggs who was a prominent pastoralist of the time. Later the brothers turned to agriculture and dairying as well as grazing. In 1907 the brothers dissolved the partnership and Alex McGruer went to live in Sydney. He died the same year. In 1885 Donald McGruer was instrumental in securing the land on which the Presbyterian Church was erected at a cost of £430, completed and dedicated in 1886. He also built the first recreation hall which was afterwards sold to the public. The building was still standing in 1965. Both brothers were members of the P. & A. Society. Donald McGruer died on 9 November 1910 aged 79 years. |
