DETERMINED SUICIDE Old Time Fighter Shoots Himself WORRIED OVER HARD TIMES Twenty years ago a hero of the hempen square and looming largely in the pugilistic world, "Bennie" Doyle of Bungendore, committed suicide at his home on Wednesday afternoon last week with a shotgun with which he shot himself in the head. Unconscious when found by his son and Sergeant Lang, Doyle died during the night at the Queanbeyan District Hospital. A poignant scene was enacted when he was brought to the hospital and wheeled into the men's ward where his son was lying, recovering from an operation and the awful truth was told him. An inquest was held at the Queanbeyan Court House by the Deputy Coroner (Mr. F. P. Woodward) and his verdict was that Edwin Benedict Doyle died from the effects of a gunshot wound self-inflicted. Another son, Gordon Benedict Doyle, told of how his father had fired a shot in the house, and the son, on entering the room, found his parent sitting on the couch with the gun in his hand. He asked what had he shot at and the father had replied "a little bird." The son asked for the gun, but the father, putting another cartridge in it, refused. A struggle ensued, but the youth could not wrest the weapon from him, whereupon he ran for the police, calling en route at his cousin's place. As he set out on the run of a mile to Bungendore, he thought he heard another shot. Finding Sergeant Lang, they hurried back with a con- stable. His father had not been well for a few weeks and was worried over financial matters, often saying that although he went shearing year after year he never seemed to get ahead. He had worried about the hard times and how he was going to live through them. Sergeant Lang stated that when he entered the room where deceased was lying on a couch, there was a shotgun across his legs with a piece of string tied from the trigger to the sideboard. There was a hole in the wall with pel- lets and a wad in it and another hole near deceased's head, part of which had been blown away.
