Personal Notes:
The Tumut and Adelong Times 9 Nov 1937
MRS. THOMAS QUILTY
There was general mourning for the full length of Gilmore Valley and, for that matter, in the Tumut and Adelong districts when word was circulated round that Mrs. Elizabeth Quilty relict of the late Thomas Quilty, of Gilmore, had passed quietly away at 10 a.m. on Sunday last, death being due to pneumonia supervening on bronchitis, at the age of 62 years. The subject of this obituary was taken seriously ill with bronchitis last Thursday week, and on Dr. J. W. Mason advice was brought in to Tumut and District Hospital yesterday week. The day following her admission pneumonia set in, and although all that was possible in the way of nursing and medical treatment was done for her, she expired as stated, fortified by the rites of her church of which she was a devoted adherent. Very Rev. Dean Sharkey and the Sisters of Mercy visiting the patient unremittingly during her illness. Deceased was the eldest daughter of the late William Curran of Adelong, and at the Roman Catholic Church, Adelong, in 1900, married the late Thomas Quilty, one of the old Quilty family of Tumut, Rev. Fr. O'Dwyer being the celebrant. Mr. Quilty purchased the farm, on which they made their first home and resided to the end, from the Quilty Estate, and by dint of hard work and practical husbandry they established a fine property, Mr. Quilty going in specially for breeding from a high-grade pedigree type of Jerseys, the progeny from which always commanded high prices, and also embarked in dairying and mixed farming. Their's was a model farm and they were a model couple. They reared to man's and woman's estate six sons and one daughter. The sons are John (Queensland), Tom and Frank (Girral), Maurice, William and Clifford (Gilmore) , and the daughter is Miss Theresa (Gilmore). Besides the griefstricken family four sisters (Mrs. Wingfield of Melbourne, Mrs. Gillespie, Mrs. Michlin and Miss Curran, all of Sydney), and three brothers survive. The coffined remains were removed from the hospital to the Roman Catholic Church, where after prayers for the dead had been recited the funeral left for the R. C. portion of the Tumut Cemetery, a large cortege following the hearse to the grave. Very Rev. Dean Sharkey, assisted by Rev. Fr. Collins (Adelong) presided at the graveside and Mr. H. W. Baker conducted the funeral arrangements. The pall-bearers were the six sons. The mourners were the seven members of the family, Mrs. Gillespie, Mrs. Windfield, Miss Kathleen Curran and Messrs Edward and James. Many beautiful wreaths bedecked the casket, included in the thoughtful senders being: — Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Beattie, Miss and John Blake, Mrs. Masters, Maggie and Will, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Dean and family, Mr. and Mrs. W. Claffey and family, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Beattie and family, the Cork family, Mr. and Mrs. O. W. Dowling and family, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Wilson, and family, E. Quilty and family, Mr. and Mrs. F. E.
