Personal Notes:
William Clear lived at Lake George, Adelong, Cootamundra, Lake Albert and finally at Yarrock in Gossett Street, Wagga Wagga. He was a carrier and a familiar figure at the Railway Goods Yard in Wagga Wagga. Emma was well-known from Goulburn to Wagga Wagga for her bushcraft. She would travel miles in an open cart to care for the sick. When she was 13 years old, she had an encounter with the bushrangers, Ben Hall, Gilbert and Dunn at Collector. She was with Constable Nelson when the bushrangers shot him. There is an account of her life in The Daily Advertiser April 27, 1937. (follows)

OCTOGENARIAN'S DEATH

MRS. EMMA CLEAR Incident with Bushrangers Recalled

With the death of Mrs. Emma Clear in her 83rd year, at her home, 181 Gurwood-street, yesterday morning, there is removed one of the most highly respected and romant figures of this district. Known from Goulburn to Wagga and the surrounding districts, Mrs. Clear was beloved by a wide circle of friends.

Born at Collector, near Goulburn, Mrs. Clear was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Dunn, of that town. The late Mr. Dunn was a pioneer of the Collector district, having arrived there from Ireland just 100 years ago, and settled on the land. Sixty-four years ago, she married Mr. William Clear, of Collector, and he predeceased her by 12 years.

There were 10 children of the mar riage, of whom eight survive. The sons are Messrs. William Edward, Francis George, James Thomas, Percy Edgar, all of Wagga, and Bert Joseph, of Mel bourne; and daughters, Mesdames W. Graham (Emma), and B. Graham (Fanny), of Wagga, and S. Rynehart (Theresa), of Rowan. One son, John Henry, and one daughter, Mrs. Suth erland (Lizzie) predeceased her. She is also survived by one brother, Mr. Harry Dunn, of Leeton.

When aged only 13 years, Mrs. Clear figured in a tragic incident in the early life of Australia. She went to her godmother, Mrs. Kimberiey, of Collec tor, whose husband conducted the local hotel and store. On this particular oc casion the State Governor had visited Collector and dined at, the hotel. Naturally the takings that day had been considerable, and on his departure he was accompanied by a large squad ron of police.

Some time later, three notorious bushrangers, Gilbert, Dunn, and Ben Hall, arrived and bailed up the occu pants and began looting tbe place. Mrs. Clear was given a. bundle of bank notes to hide, and she concealed them in a bag of oats. She then ran out the back door and summoned the aid of Constable Nelson. As they ap proached the hotel, the constable was called upon to stop by Dunn. Terri fied, Mrs. Clear begged Constable Nel son to return, but he endeavored to make the building by running from tree to tree. When he refused Dunn's third command not to approach fur ther, the bushranger shot him, and he fell dead. The bushrangers feasted royally and then, before leaving, one took possession of a pair of Wellington boots ordered for a station owner named Cooper, and left his own, re marking: 'Keep these as a keepsake from a bushranger." These boots remalned in the possession of Mrs. Kim berley until they became disintegrated through decay.

Few women knew as much of bush craft than Mrs. Clear. Many a time at midnight and in the early hours of the morning she was summoned to a sick bed. She would leave her bed, drive miles in an open cart, and then care for the sick. There are many living to-day who can thank Mrs. Clear for ministering to them during their sick ness, and saving their lives. She was indeed a wonderful woman, and it is little wonder that she was held in such high esteem.

With Mrs. Coveny, she was the oldest member of the women's branch of the H.A.C.B.S., Wagga.

A short service will be held at her late residence at 2.45 o'clock this after noon, after which the cortege will move at 3 o'clock for the Wagga cemetery.
