When he married Emily Adams in 1875, it was claimed in the marriage certificate that they were both aged 21 but Charles was only a little over 18. Also, the two witnesses appear to have been her siblings Julia and Alfred Adams. I think it was still also, in those days, necessary to be 21 or over to marry without a parent’s consent or even to legally witness a marriage......and while Julia Adams was 24 in 1876, Alfred was only 19! It was also in a Catholic Church and, as baptised Charles was Anglican I’m guessing this was Emily’s church so she would never have divorced him.

It appears that the young people had got together and told a couple of ‘furphies’; maybe Emily was, or at least said she was, pregnant even though it would be 11 months before their first child was born. I’m not sure of Emily’s correct age as the census reports aren’t exactly spot on either. The fourth son of this union, John Augustus Eade, was born on 31 May 1882, and Charles went to South Africa some time in 1881....depending on WHEN in 1881 this was it may be a catalyst.

The letters in the Cape Town archives suggest that there was some problem between Charles and Emily and one wonders if it has something to do with this youngest child. The letter of enquiry sent to the Colonial Secretary was dated July 1883 and said that they had last heard from Charles following his arrival in Port Elizabeth from England ‘nearly two years since, so it looks like he may have left the UK around the beginning of 1881.

Charles replied in August of 1883 from Burghersdorf, Maryna’s home town, advising them that the person may go to his parents for the particulars.

My uncle has Maryna’s birthday book and in it, she has written 24 June 1882 ‘C & M married’. The family always thought that this referred to Charles and Maryna but then we found (a) that Charles was already married (b)the marriage in Sydney and (c) the documents in Cape Town to show that Maryna had been betrothed to Cornelius (another ‘C’) Cruywagen and that ‘in or about the year 1883. they had ‘entered into a contract by which they agreed to marry each other’. In anticipation of this, Cornelius had settled a piece of land on Maryna but she had ‘in the month of November 1883, clandestinely left the colony with one, Charles Eade, and gas refused to carry out the aforesaid contract to intermarry with the plaintiff’.

According to the gazettes I recently found, Charles and Maryna left South Africa for Australia, travelling as husband and wife under the surname ‘Roberts’. I wonder if the date of 24th June 1882 refers to Maryna and Cornelius rather than Charles but I’m more inclined to think that it’s a convenient date that Maryna has written in later, to cover themselves."
