OBITUARY MR. ERIC R. JOHNSTON We regret to report the death of Mr. Eric Raymond Johnston of "Braeside," Gilmore Road, Tumut, which occurred at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney, on Friday last. News of his death came as a shock to his legion of friends at Gilmore and Tumut, where he was well and favorably known. A few weeks ago Mr. Johnston swallowed a small bone, which lodged in his throat and chest and after consultation with his medico he left for Sydney on Thursday last to undergo an operation for its extraction. The operation took place on Friday, but Mr. Johnston suddenly collapsed and died under the anaesthetic. Mrs. Johnston, who recently came out of hospital af ter a period of illness, accompanied her husband to Sydney. We extend our sincere sympathy to her and to members of the family in the great loss they have sustained. The late Mr. Johnston was a committeeman of the Tumut A. and P. Association, and being showminded he took a great interest in the annual Show at Tumut. He worked very hard for the Show held recently and his presence on the committee will be missed. He was also a member of the Gilmore Agricultural Bureau and a few years ago was president of that organisation for a period. Of a quiet and unassuming nature, the late Mr. Johnston was a hard but silent toiler, and his loss to the community will be felt. Prior to purchasing "Braeside" about 12 years ago from the late Mr. Archie Mc Gillivray, Mr. Johnston had a property at Wherrol Flat in the Wingham district (North Coast), where he was born. He married Miss Sofia Dorothy Stuart, of Pymble, at Linden, Blue Mountains, in 1919, and to the union there were born a family of six, two of whom predeceased him. Those surviving are Erwin (R.A.N. ), Selwyn, Amy and Rosemary. Two brothers, of a family of nine brothers and five sisters, also survive. The coffined remains were brought to Tumut yesterday morning and after a service at St. Stephen's Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev. Donald M. Baird the funeral left the church at 2.15 p.m. for the Presbyterian portion of the Tumut New Cemetery. The mortuary arrangements were in the hands of Mr. C. W. Burt and the pall-bearers were Messrs. Stuart (2 brothers-in-law), M. Archer, A. Webb, H. Piper and J. Bruce.
