The Tumut and Adelongg Times 1 Sep 1936
OBITUARY ESTHER THERESA ARENTZ The death occurred in the Tumut District Hospital yesterday morning of Mrs Esther Theresa Arentz, widow of the late Francis Arentz, of Tumut, at the advanced age of 87 years, senile decay being the cause of her demise. Deceased was brought into hospital last Saturday week and passed away peacefully in the in stitution yesterday as stated. Mrs. Arentz was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Stanton, of Bulli, where she was born. She came to Tumut in her early twenties and was associated as a domestic with the early settlers. Over sixty years ago she married Mr. Francis Arentz in the R.C. Church, Tumut, Father Toomey being the celebrant. Her husband was a building contractor and was engaged in constructing roads and bridges. Relinquishing the building trade, Mr. Arentz took up farming pursuits on Mr. Roley Shelley's property at Tumut Plains and then finally settled on "Petfield" Estate 41 years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Arentz were such wonderful tenants of the original Cooke family, who have received grants of land from the Crown, that the executors of the estate handed the lease down, being so satisfied with the measure with which Frank Arentz, wife and sons carried on the work of the farm that they allowed the tenure to continue to the end of their time. It so happens that one of the Arentz family is still in possession of what was originally known as Petfield Estate. Mr. Arentz died some eight years ago and, his wife carried on at the farm with her son. Deceased is survived by one daughter, Fanny (Mrs. G. K. Green, Tumut Plains), and six sons, Phillip (Forbes), John (Sydney), Leonard, Stephen, Reuben and Wallace (Tumut). The funeral takes place this afternoon at 3 o'clock, leaving the R.C. Church for the New Cemetery. |
