The Tumut and Adelong Times 26 Jan 1943
OBITUARY MR. FRANCIS BANWELL The death occurred at "Sefton", the home of Mrs. L. Green, Richmondstreet, Tumut, Sunday of yet another grand old man of Tumut in the person of Mr. Francis Banwell, at the age of 90 years. Mr. Banwell was in the midst of having his dinner when he suddenly collapsed and died. He had not been well for some time and had been under the doctor's care. The subject of this obituary was born at Collector, near Goulburn, in the year 1852, and was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Banwell of that town. In early manhood he was a carrier by occupation, plying between Bowning and Tumut with his horse team, which was prior to the advent of the railway to this district. Retiring from that business, he became chief carter for Mandelsohn & Co. (now Weedens Ltd.), in whose employ he remained for many years. Later he was employed by the late Mr. E. G. Bridle on his properties at Bombowlee and Brungle, as handyman and in drawing teams. Twenty-five years ago he purchased the old grey horse which since was known to everyone and commenced business as a wood carter. And this business is still carried on by his son Leo. He retired from all active work about 12 years ago. In the year 1890 the late Mr.Banwell married Miss Elizabeth Anne Garrett, an English lass, the ceremony taking place in the Oddfellows' Hall, Major Fred. Spratt, of the Salvation Army, being the celebrant. Mrs. Banwell predeceased her husband by six years. There were seven children born to the union, all of whom are living, viz., Herbert Henry (Sydney), Ethel Grace (Mrs. J. Shaw (Gilmore), Leo Ernest and Roland Stanley (Tumut), Wallace Victor (West Blowering) and Olive (Mrs. H. Buckley), Goobragandra. The late Mr.Banwell was a much respected identity of Tumut and was a man of integrity and uprightness. He was a familiar figure with his long, white, flowing beard. He was a member of the M.U. Oddfellows. The funeral took place yesterday at 1.30 p.m., leaving from 'Sefton', for the C. of E. portion of the Tumut new cemetery. Rev. S. Broadfoot officiated at the graveside and Mr. C. W. Burt carried out the mortuary arrangements. The pall-bearers were Messrs. Roland, Leo and Wallace (sons), H. Buckley, J. Shaw (sons-in-law) and E. Shaw (grandson). |
