Grace, the elder daughter of William and Annie, was born at Wimbledon in England. After sailing from London with her family in 1909, she continued her schooling in Biarra and Esk, having been enrolled at Biarra School in January 1910 at the age of eleven years and leaving in October of the same year.
When her parents selected land at Kumbia she went north with them and did dressmaking and domestic work in Kumbia and Kingaroy. She married Jack Rutherford and they lived on their farm at Ellesmere. Jack had come to Australia from Newcastle in England and, during World War 1, he saw action in Gallipoli and France. Grace and Jack had no children. Grace had a bright and happy nature and was very well liked. She suffered bad health for many years and was only fifty-five when she died. Jack lived without her for twenty years before he, too, passed away. |
