On 24 Nov 1789 he burglarised the home of William Cheeseman the elder in East Peckham, Kent, and stole a watch, its case, chain and key as well as a steel seal. The indictment records that he was a labourer of the Parish of East Peckham. He was tried at the Lent Assizes in Maidstone Kent in 1790 and sentenced to death. The sentence was commuted to transportation for life. He was transported aboard the ship 'William and Ann' which sailed from Plymouth, Devon, England in 1791 and arrived in Sydney on 28 Aug 1791 as part of the Third Fleet. The master was Ed. Bunker. George received a conditional pardon in 1800 and an absolute pardon in 1804.
By 1832 the family of George Best and Martha Chamberlain had established a pastoral station on the south bank of the Murrumbidgee River where Wagga Wagga now stands in conjunction with the properties at Seven Hills and Yass. | - Notes: Another typical pastoralist was George Best (1763-1836). He was convicted at Maidstone, Kent, on 15 March 1790, of stealing a silver watch and its attachments to the value of £5 1s 3d. Although sentenced 'to be hanged by the neck until he be dead', he was reprieved and sentenced to transportation for life, arriving in New South Wales by the 'William and Ann' in 1791.* Almost immediately he was sent to the prison farm at Toongabbee where he became an overseer and seedsman. After only five years of good ser vice there he was granted an absolute pardon on 1 May 1797.
George Best married Martha Chamberlain-also a convict who arrived by the 'Indispensible' in May 1796 in September 1797, an they settled on a thirty acre grant where the Masonic Homes at Baulkham Hills now stand. Their life was one of the early success stories of New South Wales. They raised a family of ten children, all born in wedlock and all soundly educated. Although uneducated themselves they sent some children to a boarding school in Sydney and engaged private tutors for the others. Such luxuries we possible because Best was one of the colony's most successful farmers who at his death in 1836 owned 3,155 acres of land, some at Seven Hills and the rest in the Yass district. He participated actively in the life of the colony, as a leading emancipist gave evidence before the Bigge Commission, 1819-21, and returned to England in 1823 in the Schooner 'Sally' to give further evidence. Like Tompson, Best sent flocks to pastures in the interior in the early 1820s, his son George drowning while crossing the Wollondilly River in June 1823, as he was returning from 'farther out. By 1832 the family had established a pastoral station on the south bank of the Murrumbidgee where Wagga Wagga now stands, working it in conjunction with the properties at Seven Hills and Yass. The Tompsons and Bests were the first settlers at North and South Wagga Wagga. |
