OBITUARY MR. GEORGE HUNT. By the death of Mr. George Hunt, Senr., who passed away at eight o'clock on Wednesday morning, Queanbeyan loses its oldest resident. An adventurer, who arrived in Queanbeyan in the forties, the late Mr. Hunt has experienced many scenes and changes, seasons good and had, assisted in the building up of our town and district, and was a gentleman ever ready to lend a helping hand to the needy, for which he had gained the respect and high esteem of his fellow townsmen, and won that regard due to any peace-abiding citizen. When Mr. Hunt arrived in Queanbeyan there were very few buildings to be seen, and he assisted in forming what might be termed the nucleus of the town. He was accompanied at that time by his three brothers, all of whom predeceased him. Shortly after arriving in Queanbeayn, in the good old days, long before the whistle of the locomotive was heard, and when the roads were frequented with teams conveying the necessaries of life to Coomi and other monntain towns, Mr. Hunt joined in partnership with another and obtained an hotel license, and opened business in that capacity in the very same building in which he resided for the remainder of his life in McQuoid Street, East Qneanbeyan. Deceased would have been 79 years of age on the 22nd of next month, and having led a steady life enjoyed good health till the last two years, during which time he was bedridden. His end may be attributed to a general break-up of the system. Mr. Hunt reared a family of three daughters and two sons. Of the daughters one is married Mrs John Russell -and the other two, Misses Maria and Annie are residing in Qoeanbeyan. Of the sons Mr. George is residing in town, and Mr. William resides in another portion of the State. The deceased gentleman was also related to many families in this town and district. The funeral arrangements were entrusted to Mr. Henry Lizarns, and the remains, which were eneased in a beautiful cedar panel coffin, richly and heavily mounted, bearing a beautiful silver lily at the head, and further embellished by handsome flowers, were placed reverently in the hearse punctually at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon, and followed by members of the Manchester Unity Order of Oldfellows (of which Order deceased was a member) who acted as pall-bearers, and a long concourse of vehicles, the remains were placed in Christ Church, where the Rev. W. M. White read the usual portion of the burial service. At the graveside a large number of relatives and friends assembled. The remains were interred in the Church of England portion of the general cemetery. . The Rev. -W. M!. White officiated at the graveside, and the Oddfellow's burial service was read by the Rev. W. M. Stewart.
