OBITUARY MR GEORGE LAST The death occurred on Wednesday morning last of Mr. George Last, of "Rosewood," Tumblong. The demise of such a popular and highly esteemed man was felt throughout the whole of the district, for not only was he revered but respected by all. Suffering only for a very short period from a dreaded form of heart disease which got such a hold that it was incurable, and although the greatest skill and cure were shown to him during his brief illness, it could not lengthen the life of one for whom they would gladly have given their own. Born at Gundagai 68 years ago, the late Mr. Last always lived in them parts. He first took up a grazing property at Longongo, where he remained for some years. Later he took up a sound farming proposition at Nangus. About 20 years ago he purchased the holding which now bears his name, and never a day, until he took ill, did lhe miss attending to the wants of the various matters that cropped up. A real broad-hearted Australian, the late gentleman took an interest in everything that in any way connected with the welfare or advancement of the country which was so dear to him. Over 30 years ago, he married Miss Winifred Pierce, of Darbalara, who six years ago predeceased him. His only son, Eddie, remains, and to him the responsibility of carrying on the business falls. Two surviving brothers, Messrs Henry (Cootamundra), and Albert (Muttama), and two sisters, Mrs Dargan (Binalong), and Mrs Geo Clout (Rosemount) are left to mourn their loss. The funeral took place on Thursday, and was very largely attended. The cortege started from St. Patrick's Church, where the members of the Hibernian Society, in which the late Mr. Last was a member from the time of the society's inauguration in Gundagai, formed a guard of honor as the coffin was borne to the hearse; also at the cemetery. Messrs Ken. and Stan. Last (nephews), Geo. Clout (brotherin-law), A. Hall, L. Ryan and W. Webb (all old friends of deceased) acted as pall-bearers. The mortal remains were laid to rest in the Catholic portion of the North Gundagai cemetery, Rev. A. Grealy, O.F.M, conducting the burial service.
