- Notes: Simultaneous with the development of the A.S.U, branch in town and district was the formation of militia regiments and cadet corps. Local men formed G. Company of the First Infantry Regiment in 1885 with H. B. Fitzhardinge as their commanding officer, and by 1890 there was also a company of the Murrumbidgee Light Horse. These companies and the school cadet corps paraded in the town on days of national and imperial significance, and sent representatives in the Australian contingents which went to the Soudan in 1885, South Africa in 1899 and Europe 1914-18. H. B. Fitzhardinge's son, Lieutenant Grantley Fitzhardinge, was a member of Kitchener's Horse in South Africa in 1899-1902; and one of the first long-distance recruiting marches was that by the 'Kangaroos', a group who left Wagga Wagga for Sydney on 1 December 1915 amid great enthusiasm. They were led by bands which took turn about to render inspiriting music and, although the task they had undertaken was a heavy one, they acquitted themselves with credit. This was not a sudden show of patriotism, for in 1897 Queen Victoria's Jubilee had been enthusiastically celebrated, the Borough Council striking a special medal with the name of the Mayor, Joseph Hayes, on it; and the contingent for the Soudan departed in 1885, the year before the A.S.U. was formed.
