A QUEANBEYAN ROMANCE.
(Queanbeyan Age)
The abductlon case heard at the police
Court on Friday, is altogether a curious and
mixed up affair. A man named Forrester
made his appearance in town on Thursday last,
and after making an examination of the records
of the registrar of births, marriages, and deaths,
went to Mr. Walker's store, and under the
pretext of having an interview with a little girl
residing there named Isabella Forrester, whose
father he represented himself to be, took her
away on the Goulburn coach. The mother of
the child, who is known as Mrs. Robertson,
having a short time ago been married to a man
named John Robertson, on hearing that her
daughter had been thus carried off, applied for
a warrant for the abductor. On Saturday he
was brought up in custody, and committed for
trial for abduction. The child's mother de-
clared on her oath that she had no knowledge
of the accused. He, on his part declares that
he is her lawful husband, and the father of the
child Isabella and those saw the accused,
and who knew Forrester years back, readily
identified the man. In 1875, Mrs. Forrester
(as she was then called), had the man she had
been living with as his wife punished for wife
desertion in the Queanbeyan Police Court, as
the records show ; and shortly afterwards,
somewhere in the northern districts, this For-
rester on his own plea of guilty, was sentenced
to three years' imprisonment for bigamy, on
the allegation that he married another woman,
his first wife Rebecca Forrester being alive and
residing at Queanbeyan. Forrester was
brought before Mr. Wright, J.P., and com-
mitted for trial to the next Circuit Court to be
held at Goulburn. As bail was not forthcom-
ing accused was detained in custody.
