Personal Notes:
The Tumut and Adelong Times 2 Dec 1930
OBITUARY THE LATE JAMES BACK The late Mr. Jas. Back, of Marble Hill, Gilmore, who died on November 24, was born at Billapatap, Adelong district in 1851, which was remembered amongst all the old hands as the year of the greatest drought. He was the eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Back, who died at Gocup some years ago. At the early age of 14, he commenced bullock-driving and carried that occupation on for a number of years all over the States of N.S.W. and Victoria. In 1879 he married Miss Mary Packett, of Tumut, and took up his residence at Gocup, but a few years afterwards he removed to Gilmore, and later settled at Marble Hill, gradually increasing and improving his original holding. He opened up the Marble Hill quarry and used to burn lime for the whole of the surrounding district for a number of years. Then, his sons having grown up, he went more extensively into farming and recently was successful in winning the Royal Agricultural Society's Silver Cup for the Southern Division Championship Field Maize Competition, in which he led not only for his own division but gained the greatest number of points for the whole of the State, which fact called forth great praise from the judge and the Royal Society. The late Mr. Back was typical of a lot of the old pioneers. Straight in all his dealings, hospitable to the core, and always ready to help in suffering or distress. Charity was no by-word with him, and he has left a splendid example for the younger generation to follow. He leaves a grown-up family of four sons (James W., Albert, Frank and Arthur) and three daughters (Mrs A. Hogan, Kyogle, and Misses A. and E. Back, who reside with their mother). We extend our sincere sympathy to the family in their sad loss. Dr. Clouston did all that could be done, but it was realised from the first that the case was hopeless, the cause of death being a paralytic stroke received four days previous. Rev. F. W. Rettie, Rector of All Saints, Tumut, at the grave made sympathetic references to the trials and hardships which the pioneers had to go through in the early days, that the younger generation were apt to forget, and, very likely, not having had to go through them, could hardly realise what it meant not only to the pioneers themselves alone, but to the nation as a whole, to have such a good foundation of stamina to build on.
